Chelsea\u2019s season is ending in curious circumstances. FA Cup final defeat, no Premier League win since March, and yet real excitement at the arrival of Xabi Alonso. BlueCo, though, are thinking longer-term.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Rightly or wrongly, the Chelsea ownership\u2019s private equity-inspired approach to running a football club assesses success in decades, not single seasons. <\/p>\n

In the private equity world, they would call it a \u2018time horizon\u2019. It\u2019s a philosophy in which every player is a tradable, appreciable asset, where breaking financial rules is the cost of doing business, and where Stamford Bridge is seen as a drag on cash flow, not the club\u2019s spiritual home.<\/p>\n

This cold, clinical approach to business is the reason that many commentators believed Alonso would not be tempted by Chelsea. Indeed, Enzo Maresca left in part because of the demands BlueCo\u2019s model placed on team selection, among other conditions which supposedly favoured business over football.<\/p>\n

But Alonso will take charge as \u2018manager\u2019 rather than \u2018head coach\u2019, implying that the former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen boss will enjoy greater power than his predecessors in West London. Could this be a sign that the owners are reassessing their approach?<\/p>\n

Comments from one Chelsea shareholder, Jonathan Goldstein, suggest that BlueCo do indeed recognise the traditional aspects of owning a football club. Whether to take him at face value, we\u2019ll leave Chelsea Chronicle<\/em><\/strong> readers to decide.<\/p>\n

A former solicitor and Tottenham season ticket holder, Goldstein is the founder of the investment firm Cain International, which is backed by Boehly\u2019s Eldridge Industries.<\/p>\n

Together, alongside owning a chunk of Chelsea, Goldstein and Boehly bought a stake in The Hundred cricket franchise Trent Rockets in 2025. They have dozens of real estate, hospitality and entertainment joint ventures in total and, within Chelsea boardroom dynamics, are considered key allies.<\/p>\n

Goldstein is less prominent than Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali in the media\u2019s coverage of Chelsea, but he was asked by FII Institute in April about his role at the club and how it might be possible for BlueCo to make a profit at Stamford Bridge.<\/p>\n

\u201cClearlake, Behdad Eghbali, Jose Feliciano and Todd (Boehly) would probably disagree with that,\u201d<\/em> he said when the adage that investing in football is the quickest way for a billionaire to become a millionaire was put to him.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we\u2019ve seen over a long period of time is that people gravitate towards experiences. Even in the world of AI, where everything is being disintermediated before us, there are certain things you cannot replace \u2013 the thrill and excitement of a football game, the women\u2019s team, the men\u2019s team, the thrill of live sport, the unpredictability.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWhilst there are times where it\u2019s seen as an expensive business to be involved in, we\u2019re seeing across many sports \u2013 Formula 1, the value of IPL teams in the cricket world, football clubs, NFL franchises, and basketball -that these are really wonderful, amazing long-term assets.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cHowever, you need to make sure, as a board or ownership group, that you recognise you are merely the custodian of those sports for the supporters. These assets really belong to the supporters, and what you have to ensure is that you look after them properly and deliver for them.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
