Roberto De Zerbi has shared what Djed Spence told him the day before Tottenham\u2019s relegation showdown against Everton.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Spurs faced what was arguably the biggest game in their history this afternoon, as the possibility of the club\u2019s first relegation in nearly 50 years was on the cards.<\/p>\n

However, Tottenham knew they did not have to worry about West Ham\u2019s result as long as they got the job done against Everton.<\/p>\n

A draw would have been enough for the Lilywhites to stay up, but they managed to hold on for a 1-0 win to secure their place in the Premier League for next season.<\/p>\n

Roberto De Zerbi reveals Djed Spence wanted to start for Tottenham against Everton<\/h2>\n

De Zerbi pulled a big surprise in his starting eleven, naming Spence on the right wing over Randal Kolo Muani.<\/p>\n

The Spurs boss had named several alternative options to Kolo Muani on the right pre-match, but the England full-back was not among the names he mentioned.<\/p>\n

The Italian has revealed that Spence came to his office on Saturday to make it clear that he wants to play despite suffering a broken jaw against Chelsea.<\/p>\n

De Zerbi told Football.London: \u201cDjed Spence came into my office yesterday to say he wanted to play. He said you\u2019re always talking about character and courage and I\u2019m here if you need me.\u201d<\/p>\n

De Zerbi insists Spurs players deserved to stay up<\/h2>\n

There has undoubtedly been a marked improvement in performances since De Zerbi replaced Igor Tudor.<\/p>\n

The Italian has managed to unite the squad and get them fighting for each other in their final seven games of the season, and he believes his players fully deserve to stay up.<\/p>\n

The Tottenham boss added: \u201cFootball is nice because if you give your best, you receive everything back from football. I think we deserved to stay up. We deserved more. My players played a fantastic game.\u201d<\/p>\n
