Speaking to BBC Match of the Day after West Ham\u2019s 3-0 victory over Leeds United on Sunday, Bowen admitted the club\u2019s relegation was one of the most painful moments of his career.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been here six and a half years now. Had a lot of good moments and this outweighs all of it. Getting this club relegated\u2026 it hurts,”<\/strong><\/em> <\/strong>the winger said.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Bowen was then asked directly about growing transfer speculation linking him away from the London Stadium this summer. His response left very little room for interpretation.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n He said: \u201cIt\u2019s disrespectful to everyone to start talking about that. I want this club to be in the Premier League. It\u2019s a club that means so much to me and has given me so much so my vision is to get this club back in the Premier League.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n His defiant answer would’ve pleased Hammers’ fans given their connection with him. He’s more than just their captain.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n At the same time, Chelsea will almost certainly still continue monitoring the situation closely over the coming weeks, but the incoming Alonso should aim higher.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Bowen is unquestionably a very good Premier League player, but Chelsea should probably be aiming higher this summer if Alonso is genuinely being given significant influence over recruitment decisions.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The Spaniard arrives at Stamford Bridge tasked with transforming Chelsea back into genuine contenders again, which means the club\u2019s recruitment strategy needs to reflect those ambitions.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Bowen would improve the Chelsea squad but he’s unlikely to elevate them to the level Alonso wants.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n This is even more true after the winger was also left out of Thomas Tuchel\u2019s England national football team squad for the 2026 World Cup this summer.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n His omission might’ve been a shock because he has consistently produced solid numbers, but Alonso should now be targeting players established elite-level players on both the Premier League and international stage.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Follow<\/span>Xabi Alonso will aim higher than relegation fodder<\/h2>\n
