Alejandro Garnacho, a player who moved to Stamford Bridge just twelve months ago for a cool £40m, is now the subject of intense Italian interest. AS Roma have made formal contact. They want to know the exact numbers needed to bring the twenty-two-year-old Argentina international to the Stadio Olimpico. It has thrown a massive wrench into Chelsea’s summer plans.

The hierarchy at Chelsea isn’t interested in playing games. They want a permanent sale. No loans, no drawn-out negotiation tactics, just a straight cash deal to recover what they spent. Roma have other ideas. They have roughly €40m set aside for their main summer targets, so the Italian side are trying to construct a loan deal with an option to buy later. Chelsea knocked that back instantly. They want their money now.

A difficult year in West London

Garnacho’s debut campaign in the capital was a slog. One goal and four assists in 24 Premier League games is a poor return for a £40m winger. The pressure of the price tag clearly impacted heavily. Eight goals in forty-three games across all competitions look slightly better on paper, but he rarely looked like a player who belonged in the starting eleven. Worse still, rumours of dressing room friction and attitude problems have leaked out over the last few months. He looks isolated.

Gian Piero Gasperini thinks he can fix him. The Roma boss sees the young forward as the perfect spark to ignite his frontline before the August deadline. But the financial stand-off is real. Neither club want to blink first. Meanwhile, Manchester United are watching this mess unfold with a massive grin. When they sold Garnacho last summer, they tucked a ten per cent sell-on clause into the contract.

Chelsea now face a brutal choice. They either lower their asking price to get rid of a player who doesn’t fit, or they force an unhappy asset to stick around for another gruelling season.

Rohit Sarkar

Rohit Sarkar is a passionate writer with a deep love for multiple sports, but his favourites are football and cricket.
