The Blues keep talking to the player’s representatives. A quick deal, however, looks dead in the water because the two clubs are living in completely different financial universes. Palace want an astronomical fee. They are pointing directly at Manchester City’s £116m purchase of Elliot Anderson as the baseline for a deal. That massive price tag has already done its job elsewhere, scaring off Liverpool, Manchester United, and Tottenham. All three have backed away from the table.

It is a harsh reality check for interested parties. Liverpool looked ready to offer more than £70m back in June before internal recruitment staff paused the pursuit. Spurs chose to spend a combined £185m on Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali instead. United looked at the rising costs for deep-lying midfielders and chose to run a mile. Chelsea are the only one left who haven’t completely walked.

The numbers behind the noise

The justification for a premium fee is there if you look closely. Wharton featured 34 times for Palace last term, managing one goal and five assists over 2,562 minutes on the pitch, averaging a 7.01 FotMob rating. Basic stats do not show the real picture here. We are talking about a 22-year-old whose spatial awareness, press-resistance, and general game intelligence make him a rare commodity in England. He gives away just 1.23 fouls per 90 minutes and progresses the ball with extreme composure. He also sits in the top 52nd percentile of top-flight players for non-penalty expected goals per 90.

The last twelve months completely transformed his reputation. He started the Community Shield victory over Liverpool last August and finished the season with a man-of-the-match performance in the UEFA Conference League final. Those winners’ medals sit alongside the FA Cup he lifted the previous year.

Palace hold all the cards right now. Wharton is tied down until 2029, meaning Selhurst Park officials are under zero pressure to sell. New manager Pierre Sage has Europa League football to prepare for, and losing the player who knits his entire midfield together would sabotage the project. The South London side are using that Anderson fee as a shield.

Read: Chelsea begin talks to complete signing of £30m Brazilian star

Chelsea value the midfielder somewhere between £50m and £75m. That leaves a massive gap of around £40m to bridge. There is a total disagreement over what the player is actually worth in today’s market. Unless Chelsea find a way to find that extra cash, or Palace suddenly lower their demands, the transfer will remain completely stuck.

More Chelsea Stories from Scorzo

Adam Wharton to Chelsea and why Palace’s valuation changes everything Adam Wharton to Chelsea: Chelsea…

[4

post-16772","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-chelsea
["GET
