With Andrey Santos packing his bags for Manchester United in a deal that includes a handy 10% sell-on clause for the Blues, Todd Boehly and his recruitment team are already tracking a potential replacement. The man in question? Botafogo’s 25-year-old midfielder Danilo Santos.

According to a live broadcast by FogãoNET journalist Wellington Arruda, Chelsea have lodged an initial enquiry with the Rio de Janeiro club. The figures being tossed about sit around the €40 million mark, which translates to roughly £34 million in British money. Caught Offside and Sport Witness quickly picked up the trail. But hold your horses. This is far from a done deal.

Brazilian journalist Jorge Nicola has thrown a massive bucket of cold water on the whole thing. He claims Chelsea’s supposed interest is mostly noise generated by agent Kia Joorabchian. The theory is that Joorabchian, using his connections with Danilo’s representative Giuliano Bertolucci, simply pushed the midfielder’s name toward Stamford Bridge. Chelsea’s actual recruitment department might not even have blinked. (Via X)

A complicated market with several rivals already in the picture

Danilo is a left-footed defensive midfielder who knows the Premier League. Mind you, his previous stint on these shores was a bit of a disaster. He joined Nottingham Forest from Palmeiras back in January 2023, but nasty injuries completely derailed his time at the City Ground. He barely featured before Botafogo rescued him and took him back to Brazil in July 2025.

Since that move, he has looked completely reborn. During the recent Brazilian Série A campaign, he racked up 7 goals and 2 assists, averaging a brilliant 7.47 FotMob rating. Across all competitions, he hammered in 10 goals and supplied 3 assists in 24 games. That sort of output from deep is bound to attract attention. It even earned him a spot in Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil squad for the 2026 World Cup, though he only managed 43 minutes across four substitute cameos before the Seleção were knocked out by Norway.

Botafogo wanted €40 million before the tournament started. They hoped a big World Cup would inflate his value, but that plan backfired given his lack of minutes. Now, the Brazilian club will likely have to lower their expectations.

They also face a fiercely competitive market. Chelsea are not running a solo race here. Far from it. Newcastle United are currently leading the English charge, viewing Danilo as the perfect man to step into Bruno Guimarães’ shoes if he secures a move to Arsenal. Manchester United have also opened lines of communication with Botafogo, despite already signing Andrey Santos. Arsenal have snooped around, while Galatasaray and Zenit St Petersburg have both touched base.

To complicate matters, Nottingham Forest reportedly hold a sell-on clause from his original exit. Botafogo want a European sale, but they are dug in over their valuation.

Read: Chelsea are still interested in £116m midfielder

Scorzo’s opinion:

The chatter around Stamford Bridge requires a healthy dose of scepticism. Danilo’s recent numbers are genuinely impressive, and the sheer volume of clubs looking at him proves he has talent. Replacing Andrey Santos with a player who already has some experience in English football makes sense on paper. Yet, if this is purely agent-led manoeuvring rather than a genuine scouting push by Chelsea, the story has been blown out of proportion. Newcastle look like a much more realistic destination right now. Paying £34 million for a player who just sat on the bench for most of the World Cup feels steep.

More Chelsea Stories from Scorzo

Danilo Santos to Chelsea: Blues in £40m talks for Brazilian star as Stamford Bridge rebuild…

[4

post-17175","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-chelsea
["GET
