Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport reports that negotiations collapsed completely once the Serie A champions realised the London club would not negotiate on the \u20ac41 million fee. The decision stalls what was shaping up to be one of the more interesting defensive sagas of the summer. Now, the 26-year-old centre-back is left in limbo.<\/p>\n
He wanted the move. There was never any doubt about that. San Siro was his preferred destination, offering Champions League football and a guaranteed starting spot under Cristian Chivu, who needed cover after the departures of veteran defenders Francesco Acerbi, Stefan de Vrij, and Matteo Darmian. Representatives had even travelled to Milan to thrash out personal terms, and an agreement in principle was already in place.<\/p>\n
There was plenty of drama behind the scenes, too. Como president Mirwan Suwarso actually phoned Inter\u2019s sporting director Piero Ausilio to offer a sporting courtesy, confirming they would step aside to let Inter have a free run at the player. Como had already seen their own \u20ac25 million bid knocked back by Chelsea, and even though they discussed a revised structure of \u20ac30 million plus bonuses, they knew Chalobah only had eyes for Milan. That gentleman\u2019s agreement is now useless. Chelsea held firm.<\/p>\n
A look at the numbers behind Chelsea\u2019s massive valuation<\/h3>\n
They are playing hardball for a reason. Look at how much he played. During the 2025\/26 season, Chalobah was a key man for Chelsea, racking up 34 Premier League appearances and 2,783 minutes on the pitch. He chipped in with three goals, helped keep nine clean sheets, and averaged over five clearances a game. Toss in eight appearances in the Champions League, and his total workload across all competitions came to 47 matches.<\/p>\n
Chelsea know what they have. His contract runs until June 2028, and the club hold an option for another year. More importantly, he is an academy graduate. Selling a homegrown player means the transfer fee goes on the books as pure profit under the Premier League\u2019s tight financial rules. Taking a discount made no sense for them. Inter simply did not have that kind of cash to burn, especially with \u20ac25 million already spent on bringing in Anan Khalaili from Union Saint-Gilloise.<\/p>\n
Where does this leave him? Como have already pivoted to Galatasaray\u2019s Davinson S\u00e1nchez. While transfer experts in Italy suggest Chelsea have checked in with both clubs to see if talks can be revived, the feedback has been cold. High wage demands are not helping matters either.<\/p>\n
Crystal Palace are still lurking in the background. Chelsea have previously looked at using Chalobah in a part-exchange deal for Palace defender Maxence Lacroix. Currently, the player is with the England squad preparing for a massive World Cup semi-final against Argentina, having joined Thomas Tuchel\u2019s group as a late injury replacement. He has plenty to focus on, but his club future remains totally up in the air. Chelsea did the right thing here. A 26-year-old defender coming off a strong season is worth every penny of that \u00a335 million evaluation. They should not settle for less.<\/p>\n
