Chelsea appear to have completed a blistering transfer to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa in a deal worth \u00a3117 million (\u20ac138m) that is remembered as much for what happens after the move as the deal itself.<\/p>\n

The Blues are paying more than double Rogers\u2019 Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) to make him the fifth-most expensive player in history \u2013 and the most expensive ever to move to a club that won\u2019t be competing immediately in the Champions League.<\/p>\n

Yet this was not the future forecast for the 23-year-old just a matter of days ago. Rogers, who will celebrate his 24th birthday next Sunday, was expected to sign for Premier League winners Arsenal in a deal that was seen as altogether more logical given the Gunners will have European football.<\/p>\n

Chelsea, though, had other ideas and are now ready to complete a deal \u2013 or rather series of deals \u2013 that could see their move for Rogers writ large in football infamy.<\/p>\n

Under the rule of BlueCo, the Stamford Bridge side has mastered finding transfer loopholes to exploit to allow its lavish spending, which will tip the \u20ac2 billion mark when the deal for Rogers is finally secured.<\/p>\n

First there were contract of unprecedented length to allow transfer fees to be amortised over prolonged periods of time, thereby easing the financial strain on the club (from a short-term accounting perspective, in any case). Then came deals that saw them simply shift around assets like hotels and the women\u2019s team to other parts of their business in \u2018sales\u2019 for well above market value.<\/p>\n

None of this was against the Premier League\u2019s accounting rules, which Chelsea continue to leverage to make big deals.<\/p>\n

Rogers is simply the latest example. His Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) is only \u20ac65.1m, yet he will move for easily twice that figure.<\/p>\n

So how might they get away with it this time?<\/p>\n

How Chelsea and Aston Villa could both profit again<\/h2>\n

The answer lies with Aston Villa.<\/p>\n

Chelsea have enjoyed a symbiotic relationship with the Birmingham club in the transfer market in recent years. In 2024, the Blues paid well above the odds to sign Omari Kellyman while selling Ian Maatsen to Villa for well above his ETV. Both teams profited through transactions that benefited each club’s financial position.<\/p>\n

And this time around, the Stamford Bridge side have no shortage of options to sell to Villa: Nicolas Jackson, Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens being three obvious possibilities.<\/p>\n

Unai Emery\u2019s side have been financially unlocked by the fact that their accounts show a massive profit on Rogers, who they signed for just \u00a38m in January 2024. As such, virtually the whole transfer fee \u2013 minus the 20% profit that they are due to Middlesbrough \u2013 is recorded as immediately profit in their books.<\/p>\n

That immediately creates room for Villa to spend again, potentially on players Chelsea are keen to move on, with Nicolas Jackson, Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens leading contenders.<\/p>\n

With the Blues having paid over the odds for Rogers, Emery\u2019s side can respond in kind to benefit Chelsea\u2019s books by doing the same for these players.<\/p>\n

Chelsea, it must be stressed, are playing entirely within the Premier League’s rules, which they understand better than any other club, manipulating them to work in their favour.<\/p>\n

If Aston Villa end up paying inflated fees for one or more Chelsea players in the weeks ahead, Rogers may come to symbolise not just a record transfer, but the latest example of how the Blues have been able to make the financial rules that constrain others a competitive advantage for themselves.<\/p>\n
