Gary Lineker described Enzo Fernandez\u2019s red card in the World Cup final as ‘crazy’ – as Alan Shearer branded the Argentina star ‘stupid’. Fernandez was sent off just before the additional period for a second yellow card.<\/p>\n
The Chelsea midfielder picked up his first yellow card for showing dissent towards referee Slavko Vincic. He received his marching orders after a poor challenge on Pau Cubarsi in the last minute of normal time.<\/p>\n
Fernandez raised his hands to the Argentinian supporters, asking for forgiveness as he made his way down the tunnel. And following his side\u2019s 1-0 defeat, Fernandez witnessed his team-mates Leandro Paredes and Thiago Almada clash with Spain\u2019s Gavi, which resulted in Paredes also receiving a red card.<\/p>\n
And the chaotic scenes led to Lineker saying on the Rest is Football podcast: \u201cWe saw a bit after the final whistle. Paredes let himself down.\u201d<\/p>\n
To which Micah Richards replied: \u201cThat was embarrassing. Win or lose, you\u2019ve got to shake hands\u201d – before Lineker continued: \u201cMost of their players were magnanimous. Messi and others, they were fine.<\/p>\n
\u201cParedes got given a red card after the game, which is just. Enzo Fernandez, that was crazy wasn\u2019t it? The first one was for whinging.\u201d<\/p>\n
Before Shearer weighed in saying: \u201cAbsolutely stupid. He got done for dissent which he should never have done. But then to do that\u2026<\/p>\n
\u201cTo go into that tackle when you\u2019re on a yellow, that\u2019s when you thought Spain are going to win this. He\u2019s cost his country massively. As much as he helped get them through to the final with that wonderful goal against England, he\u2019s cost them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reflecting on his side\u2019s defeat, Lionel Scaloni said: \u201cI feel sadness but knowing that we left everything out there. I have a lot of things to say about how we got here, but it\u2019s not worth it.<\/p>\n
\u201cI want to thank these guys eternally for giving us another World Cup final and for competing until the end. They were better, that\u2019s the truth.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut I\u2019ll hold on to an enormous memory of what they have done, of what it\u2019s worth to get this far. We have to give it huge validity because it takes a lot to get here.\u201d<\/p>\n
