It\u2019s not been a great 24 hours for Enzo Fernandez, who cost his national side Argentina in the final of the 2026 World Cup.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Enzo Fernandez sparked a massive political storm at the World Cup after celebrating Argentina\u2019s victory over England by holding up a banner claiming the Falkland Islands belong to Argentina. <\/p>\n

The provocative gesture immediately ignited fury across the UK, prompting former Margaret Thatcher aide Nile Gardiner to demand that the Home Office revoke the midfielder\u2019s UK visa and deport him. <\/p>\n

FIFA are currently investigating the incident, but are yet to make a statement on the potential punishment that Fernandez could face, but it\u2019s unlikely to affect Chelsea.<\/p>\n

Immigration expert Asma Bashir has given her thoughts on whether Fernandez\u2019s UK visa could actually be revoked, and it\u2019s good news for Chelsea.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat power can take account of conduct outside the UK and does not require a criminal conviction.<\/p>\n

\u201cHowever, it is generally directed at serious conduct, such as extremism, threats to national security, serious criminality, incitement to violence or behaviour presenting a genuine threat to UK society.<\/p>\n

\u201cAny decision must be evidence-based, reasonable, proportionate and made separately for each individual.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is highly unlikely that displaying the \u2018Falkland Islands are Argentine\u2019 banner would, by itself, justify cancelling a Premier League player\u2019s visa.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe statement is plainly provocative and politically sensitive, but it reflects Argentina\u2019s established territorial position and does not, on its face, advocate violence, criminality or hatred.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe law does not normally permit immigration powers to be used simply to punish a foreign national for expressing an unpopular or offensive political opinion.<\/p>\n

\u201cCancellation on that basis alone would be vulnerable to challenge on proportionality and freedom-of-expression grounds.\u201d<\/p>\n

The midfielder showed a total lack of discipline in the World Cup final, picking up a reckless 93rd-minute red card that left Argentina in an awful position, much like the discipline we saw at Chelsea last season.<\/p>\n

This follows ongoing off-field controversies, including the friction over his country\u2019s banner, combined with last season\u2019s vocal friction regarding Chelsea, when Fernandez spoke out about his future.<\/p>\n
