Chelsea think they have made a smart piece of business with Alejandro Garnacho, but Unai Emery\u2019s recent track record suggests otherwise.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Alejandro Garnacho\u2019s single season at Chelsea never quite took off as expected after his move from Manchester United. Despite racking up 43 appearances, the winger struggled for consistent form and quickly fell out of favor under Liam Rosenior. <\/p>\n

With doubts over the Argentine, Chelsea have agreed to send Garnacho to Aston Villa on a season-long loan. And the deal includes a conditional obligation to buy for around \u00a342.5m, triggered by easily achievable performance targets. <\/p>\n

Long admired by Villa boss Unai Emery, the move offers Garnacho a fresh start and regular minutes, while allowing Chelsea to potentially recoup their investment.<\/p>\n

Chelsea\u2019s history with conditional loan clauses<\/h2>\n

The Blues have had their fair share of experiences when it comes to conditional clauses that haven\u2019t been met, both for and against them. <\/p>\n

Nicolas Jackson (Bayern Munich, 2025\/26):<\/strong> Most recently, Bayern Munich structured Nicolas Jackson\u2019s loan with a conditional obligation requiring 40 starts, which they openly admitted he would never reach behind Harry Kane, leaving Jackson set to return to Stamford Bridge.<\/p>\n

Malang Sarr (Monaco, 2022\/23):<\/strong> Sarr joined Monaco on loan with an option to buy that would automatically become a mandatory obligation if he reached a specific appearance threshold. Because Monaco opted not to play him enough to trigger the clause, he returned to Chelsea at the end of the season.<\/p>\n

Tiemoue Bakayoko (AC Milan & Monaco):<\/strong> Bakayoko spent multiple seasons on loan with conditional buy options (including an appearance-based obligation clause during his second loan stint at AC Milan). He failed to hit the required match count, leading Milan to pass on buying him and leaving Chelsea stuck with him until his contract was eventually terminated.<\/p>\n

Jadon Sancho (Chelsea loop-hole):<\/strong> While on the flip side, Chelsea themselves signed Jadon Sancho on a loan from Manchester United with a conditional obligation to buy (dependent on league finish), which included a clause allowing Chelsea to pay a penalty fee to back out if they decided against keeping him.<\/p>\n

If Alejandro Garnacho fails to impress at Aston Villa and misses his performance targets, Chelsea will be left in a brutal spot. Returning to Stamford Bridge with diminished value and high wages, the Blues will have zero leverage, virtually guaranteeing a financial loss when trying to offload him permanently.<\/p>\n
