It always acts as a ‘season finale’ for the sport, but the summer transfer window has been raging on in the background nonetheless.

Former Manchester City star Julian Alvarez has been touted with a move away from Atletico Madrid this summer. Recently, several teams in the Premier League who are keen to land his signature – including Arsenal and Liverpool – have seen their efforts to sign him significantly boosted.

Barcelona were considered top candidates to sign the Argentinian international, but according to SPORT, they are not willing to increase their bid of £85 million.

As such, if the Reds or the Gunners are willing to exceed this valuation, they could land their man. However, they aren’t the only clubs in the race as things stand.

Fellow Premier League giants Chelsea are also amongst the interested parties. Earlier in the month, Football365 reported that the Blues were looking to submit a bid of £106 million for the player, though we haven’t heard anything on this front since.

As well as this, back in June, AS (via The Standard) stated that Manchester United were also linked with a move for Alvarez and had ‘begun talks’, though it is unclear how far these actually progressed.

Furthermore, Real Madrid are also long-standing admirers of Alvarez, having seen a £130 million bid rejected last month (via BBC Sport). Other clubs might not have to pay this much – it’s highly unlikely that Atletico would want to sell a key player to their bitterest of rivals at any cost.

Curiously, Diario Sport claimed that Alvarez had ‘ruled out’ a move back to the Premier League a couple of weeks ago. Nevertheless, this hasn’t dissuaded any of his potential suitors in England for the time being.

Julian Alvarez 2025/26 La Liga stats

Games

Goals

Assists

Y. They do not tell the whole story, however. In the Champions League last season, the 26-year-old scored ten goals in 15 Champions League goals, alongside four assists.

This, simply put, is why he is so highly rated at present. A wonderful finisher with excellent movement and an indomitable work rate to match, Alvarez is a complete centre-forward.

Capable of scoring both incisive poacher’s finishes and wonder goals from range, he is also adept from attacking set-pieces. A nippy, strong player who can hold the ball up, there is very little that he cannot do.

As we’ve just mentioned, he is also just 26 years of age. He hasn’t even hit his prime years yet – the best is still yet to come from this genuine superstar.

He would be a fine asset to any of the four Premier League clubs looking to snap him up, but it remains to be seen if a deal can be struck.

After the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup, football moves on.
