Or at least, as boxed off as a mega-money transfer saga ever gets in the middle of summer. For months, Bruno Guimaraes to North London has been the headline glued to almost every back page in the country. Yet Stamford Bridge is twitching again. Fresh off snatching Morgan Rogers right out of Mikel Arteta’s hands, Chelsea’s recruitment team might be preparing another sensational raid.

Writing on Substack, Chelsea insider Simon Phillips, via Caughtoffside, dropped a line that set alarm bells ringing in N5. Credible voices inside Chelsea keep bringing up the Newcastle midfielder. Phillips wasn’t offering guarantees, far from it. But he made one thing crystal clear: he would not bother referencing it without solid reason.

Why both London clubs are desperate for Newcastle’s talisman

He was phenomenal last term. Absolutely electric. At 28, the Brazilian finished the 2025-26 Premier League campaign operating right at the peak of his powers. Nine goals and five assists across 29 league outings tell part of the story, particularly since those nine strikes made him Newcastle’s top scorer in the league. Look at the underlying data. Over 2,459 minutes played, he put 54.76% of his shots on target. He created 29 key passes. Opponents simply could not stop him legally, fouling him an average of 1.61 times every 90 minutes because trying to take the ball off him cleanly was a nightmare.

Arsenal lead the race, but delay brings danger

Negotiations between Arsenal and Newcastle have finally kicked off, according to The Times. Formal talks, club to club. Standard procedure. But Arsenal move at their own deliberate pace, slow and methodical. That hesitation is precisely what has given Chelsea a window of opportunity. Phillips was direct in his assessment. If Chelsea want to pull off the unthinkable, they need to act right now. Guimaraes is edging closer to completing a move to the Emirates, meaning any late attempt requires instant action.

Stamford Bridge has focused heavily on youth recently. Morgan Rogers, Marco Palestra, Emanuel Emegha, and Geovany Quenda are all fresh faces through the door. Bringing in a 28-year-old like Guimaraes represents a clear turn toward proven experience. It would not be completely out of character, either. Chelsea previously expressed interest in Granit Xhaka, proving the decision-makers are not totally against adding seasoned leaders when the opportunity arises.

The £100m stumbling block

Newcastle are not going to roll over. Eddie Howe’s side hold a massive position of strength thanks to a contract running until 2028. Reports consistently put the price tag north of £100 million. Arsenal have spent months building toward this deal, and their ability to fend off Chelsea comes down to how quickly they can wrap up the final paperwork.

Read: Arsenal keen on deal to sign £40m Man Utd transfer target

Hijacking Rogers was one thing. A clean, relatively straightforward piece of business. Snatching Guimaraes away from Arsenal at a nine-figure fee while formal negotiations are already active is a whole different beast. But after what happened with Rogers, nobody in North London is sleeping easily tonight.

More Arsenal Stories from Scorzo

Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal: Chelsea eye spectacular hijack as Arsenal battle for Bruno Guimaraes Bruno…

[4

post-20759","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-chelsea
["GET
