Spain defeated Argentina to win the World Cup after 16 years. <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-fernandez-talks-about-what-went-wrong\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fernandez talks about what went wrong <\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fernandez addressed the public for the first time after the <strong>FIFA World Cup <\/strong>final (which was held on July 19). He protested a refereeing decision in the 82nd minute, as reported by Hindustan Times. The referee gave the midfielder another yellow card in the 93rd minute for a late challenge against Spanish defender Pau Cubarsi. This resulted in a red card for Fernandez, and he had to leave the field.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Days later, the Argentinian player shared his thoughts on his Instagram post. He did not talk about his send-off, but he wrote that his team <strong><em>\u201chas represented our country in the best possible way.\u201d<\/em><\/strong> <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fernandez further added that he wants to thank all the fans for their continuous support. The midfielder was a part of <strong>the Argentina team<\/strong> that won the FIFA World Cup in 2022. This was their first World Cup title win after 36 years. Argentina defeated France 4-2 on penalties to win the title. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After that, the <strong>Chelsea<\/strong> midfielder participated at the 2024 Copa America, where Argentina won the title for the second consecutive time. The midfielder is currently in a dilemma about the upcoming season. Although Chelsea want to retain him, he isn\u2019t too sure about the same. Apart from that, Fernandez also needs to work on his fitness. He sustained a knee injury in November 2025. In April 2026, he also suffered from a calf injury during a match against Manchester United. However, he recovered in time for the FIFA World Cup.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fernandez performed well individually for the Blues last year. He also played a crucial role in the FIFA Club World Cup. The Blues won the title for the second time since the 2021 edition. Despite that, they finished 10th in the <strong>Premier League<\/strong> overall. Initially, there were rumors about Fernandez making a move for Real Madrid. However, he has not officially confirmed the same. Moreover, if anybody wants to buy Fernandez for the next year, they will have to pay an asking price of \u00a3120 million. He was signed from Benfica in January 2023 for an amount of \u00a3106.8 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fernandez\u2019s aggression may have cost him the World Cup this time. However, he has a lot to achieve. The age factor is in his favor, and if he stays with Chelsea, he could bring back the Blues to winning ways. Team manager Xabi Alonso has expressed faith in his skills. Apart from that, the midfielder will face additional responsibilities. Although he is not a striker like Lionel Messi, he will have to lead from the front in the runup to the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
