The ambitious Italian side have put in a third proposition, worth some £26 million, which is based on a fixed fee plus add-ons. That figure goes some way to bridging the gap between the two parties, with the Blues having long since demanded around £30 million.

The 27-year-old has been the most decisive variable of his own volition during these protracted discussions. Chalobah is said to be fully in love with the idea of working under Cesc Fabregas, whose side finished fourth in Serie A with 71 points and qualified for the Champions League for the first time in their 119-year existence. Chelsea, meanwhile, have a strong fiscal incentive, with the sale of the academy graduate being recorded as pure profit in their accounts.

To argue that the defender has been marginalised on sporting merit alone is a little wide of the mark. Chalobah made 34 Premier League appearances last season, playing 2,782 minutes and scoring three goals from centre-back, while also making eight appearances in the Champions League. He is under contract to Stamford Bridge until June 2028, which gives Chelsea some decent bargaining power.

Talks are understood to pick up considerably over the weekend, with both clubs eager to come to a definitive conclusion. If the remaining details are ironed out, Chalobah will swap the rigours of English football for a European campaign in Lombardy.

Chelsea close in on £51m deal for Maxence Lacroix as defensive overhaul accelerates

Chalobah’s likely exit cannot be separated from Chelsea’s most notable piece of summer business at the back. The Blues have reportedly agreed a deal with Crystal Palace for Maxence Lacroix, with a fee in the region of £51m being discussed. The France international has completed his medical and will sign a long-term deal at Stamford Bridge.

Since arriving from Wolfsburg in 2024 for relatively little money, Lacroix has improved in leaps and bounds. The 26-year-old made 55 appearances in all competitions last season, winning the Community Shield and the Conference League with the Eagles.

Chalobah is by no means the only one with an uncertain future this summer, with Benoit Badiashile, Axel Disasi, Wesley Fofana, Tosin Adarabioyo, and Mamadou Sarr all in the same boat. Chelsea’s recalibration of their backline is some distance from its conclusion, with Marco Palestra already on the books from Atalanta for a reported £43 million.

[4

post-21392","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-chelsea
["GET
