Anyway, back to London. Rogers\u2019 bold claim about a club that finished 33 points behind actual Premier League champions Arsenal last season stoked up all the old feelings and arguments. So, who are the biggest club in London?<\/p>\n

What do the biggest clubs do? They win stuff. And the more you win, the more your reputation grows, as do your coffers, and your size.<\/p>\n

But it also depends on what you win. A case full of League Cups and Community Shields is far less impressive than one of Premier League trophies and European Cups.<\/p>\n

Arsenal have more than double the league titles of Chelsea, won over a far longer period of time, and almost twice as many FA Cups. Domestically, there is only one winner.<\/p>\n

Only, isn\u2019t being champions of Europe (or the world) bigger than being champions of England? Arsenal\u2019s continental shortcoming is their glaring weak spot. The biggest clubs have won the European Cup. Arsenal haven\u2019t.<\/p>\n

A penalty shootout against Paris Saint-Germain away from glory, of course, but Tottenham have won a European trophy more recently, so have West Ham, so have Crystal Palace.<\/p>\n

Chelsea have two Champions Leagues, two Europa Leagues, even a Conference League.<\/p>\n

They boasted that they are the only club in history to win every major European trophy, which, more than anything, made you spare a thought for fans of the Inter Cities Fairs Cup.<\/p>\n

As soon as Gabriel sent his penalty high into the stands, Chelsea posted an invitation to book a stadium tour at \u2018London\u2019s Home of Trophies\u2019, with Big Ears front and centre.<\/p>\n

They are two-time Club World Cup winners, too, which sounds cool but is only starting to feel important now that there\u2019s \u00a3100m to win.<\/p>\n

Gravitas comes with a weight of history, too. That all but one of Chelsea\u2019s league titles have been since 2005, with a Russian oligarch signing bigger cheques than anyone else, will tell you that time is on Arsenal\u2019s side. <\/p>\n

Since Arsenal joined the Football League in 1893, their average league position is 8.3. Across Chelsea\u2019s history, theirs is 12.7. Tottenham\u2019s is 11.7.<\/p>\n

Across the 110 seasons in which both clubs have existed, Arsenal have finished higher in 77 of them.<\/p>\n

Even in the Premier League era, when Chelsea stormed to power, the two clubs have split a higher finish 17 times apiece, though 16 of those for the Blues\u2019 came across an 18-season period from 2004-05 to 2022-23.<\/p>\n

However, Arsenal\u2019s average position of 3.8 across the entire Premier League era still betters Chelsea\u2019s of 5.<\/p>\n

And even now Arsenal are current champions, after finishing second three times, during which time Chelsea finished 10th and 12th.<\/p>\n

There was a brief five-year period before Arsenal\u2019s move during which Chelsea boasted the marginally bigger crowds but, across history, the Gunners have had the greater attendances.<\/p>\n

Chelsea\u2019s average crowd even dropped below 13,000 in the early 1980s. Until Chelsea get an extension, or move, they cannot compete with Arsenal. Or Tottenham.<\/p>\n

Yes, you can suggest, as the club\u2019s supporters\u2019 trust did during the malaise of Wenger\u2019s final years, that Arsenal have not always been completely honest with their attendance figures \u2014 filled seats or tickets sold \u2014 but when the club\u2019s fans come out they do so in force. Islington Council estimated more than a million people turned up for their Premier League title bus parade.<\/p>\n

When Chelsea had theirs in 2015, official numbers were around 70,000. Around 200,000 turned up for their first under Jose Mourinho in 2005.<\/p>\n

What began under Abramovich has continued into the BlueCo years. Chelsea\u2019s net spend \u2014 that\u2019s NET spend \u2014 over the past five years is more than \u00a3800m, nearly \u00a3150m more than any other Premier League side and \u00a3262m more than Arsenal.<\/p>\n

Chelsea announced a Premier League-record pre-tax loss of \u00a3262.4m earlier this year for the 2024-25 season. They have spent well over a billion but not much of it well.<\/p>\n

Kieran Maguire, the football finance expert, recently listed the biggest wage bills in Premier League history, adjusted for football inflation and the spending power clubs had at the time.<\/p>\n

Chelsea made up eight of the top 10 with all their seasons from 2003-04 to 2010-11 at the height of their Abramovich era.<\/p>\n

Arsenal\u2019s first appearance on the list, their 2011-12 season, is in 51st place. Ahead of them are 16 different Chelsea seasons, 17 Manchester United seasons, 12 Manchester City seasons and five Liverpool seasons.<\/p>\n

And yet over previous two sets of results, Arsenal have blown Chelsea out of the water in terms of their revenue: \u00a3691m to \u00a3491m.<\/p>\n

Declan Rice is the only Arsenal signing of more than \u00a3100m.<\/p>\n

Chelsea now have three: Rogers, Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez. Their top seven all come in higher than Arsenal\u2019s second most expensive arrival in \u00a372m Nicolas Pepe. If they are to get Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle, they will have to go higher than that.<\/p>\n

Arsenal lead the way, too, when it comes to producing England stars. Rice, Madueke, Bukayo Saka and Eberechi Eze\u2019s involvement in the World Cup quarter-final against Norway, took the club past 1,000 caps for\u00a0Arsenal players. <\/p>\n

\u2018The way Arsenal conduct themselves comes from a place of prestige,\u2019 a prominent agent who has dealt with both clubs tells Daily Mail Sport. \u2018Chelsea have more of a big-club approach in the way they get things done. They are very much: if we want the player, we will do what it takes to get them. Put our cards on the table. That is a big-club mentality.<\/p>\n

\u2018There\u2019s definitely two different cultures, through which both see themselves as the biggest club in London but go about it in a different way. Arsenal are like your old money, slightly entitled aristocrat who can fall back on title and family history. Chelsea are the nouveau riche, super successful city worker who isn\u2019t shy about showing off how much money they have and uses that to drive more success.\u2019<\/p>\n

Elon Musk might be the richest man in the world and Tesla the largest automobile company by market capitalisation, whatever that means, but good luck convincing anyone they are really bigger than Mercedes or Ferrari.<\/p>\n
