Millie Bright has announced her immediate retirement, ending a trophy-laden career during which she won eight Women\u2019s Super League titles and six Women\u2019s FA Cups with Chelsea.<\/p>\n
The defender, who retired from international football in 2025, also helped England win the 2022 European Championship on home soil, and in 2023 \u2013 in the absence of the injured captain Leah Williamson \u2013 led the side to the World Cup final. She won 88 caps.<\/p>\n Bright has been Chelsea\u2019s club captain since the start of the 2023-24 season and a core part of their team since joining in 2014. She helped Chelsea win every major women\u2019s trophy in the club\u2019s history. They lifted their first major silverware in 2015, sparking a decade of domestic dominance.<\/p>\n Bright played 314 times for Chelsea and helped them lift 20 trophies. She is sidelined with an ankle injury sustained in February and has retired in advance of the final two WSL matches and May\u2019s FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City.<\/p>\n Chelsea described Bright as a club legend and said they would honour her career before their final WSL game, against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on 16 May. \u201cCongratulations and good luck, Millie,\u201d they said. \u201cWe will be forever grateful for your contribution, and we know you are never done at Chelsea.\u201d<\/p>\n The 32-year-old will stay at Chelsea in two off-pitch roles, as a trustee of their foundation and in a new role as an ambassador.<\/p>\n Bright, who began her career at Doncaster Rovers Belles, making her debut in 2009, said: \u201cRepresenting Chelsea over the last 12 years has been everything to me but I\u2019m now ready to say goodbye to playing football. I\u2019ve given all I can and I never wanted to fight for any other badge. It is now time and I\u2019m ready to go into a new era. I\u2019m always going to be Chelsea but just in a different way.\u201d<\/p>\n The England head coach, Sarina Wiegman, said: \u201cIt is hard to put into words the impact she has had.
