This summer’s outlay has obviously resulted in a massive net spend in the transfer market, but Barca did manage to somehow convince Paris Saint-Germain to pay \u20ac48.5m (\u00a343m\/$59m) for Ferran Torres, while Lewandowski’s departure on a free transfer, and Liverpool’s willingness to cover all of Ronald Araujo’s salary during his loan stay at Anfield, significantly eased the strain on the wage bill. <\/span><\/p>\n So, could Barca yet bring in Alvarez to fill the significant hole in the attack left by Lewandowski? As things stand, Menchen is not so sure. However, the pure-profit sale of another academy product might well do the trick.<\/span><\/p>\n “You always to have to remember that this is a cash-flow business, so if you sell Marc Casado, for example, for thirty million, you could cover the cost of Julian Alvarez for this season, as the cost of a new signing is amortised, meaning it’s spread out over the duration of his contract,” he explains.<\/span><\/p>\n “Also, selling players from La Masia, combined with the eventual completion of the new Camp Nou, the increase in museum revenue tied to the recovery of tourism in Barcelona, means Barca will probably be able to operate with complete financial freedom next summer for the first time since before the pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n So, does this mean that Barcelona’s financial troubles are over? “They are for now,” Menchen says. “My one minor concern is the 40 million that Barca continues to pay to Sixth Street for the Liga rights. It might not seem like a lot of money for a club that earns a billion in revenue on an annual basis but it’s still a game of small margins and it could prove the difference between Barca signing a player that Madrid also want. <\/span><\/p>\n “However, I do think we are seeing the beginning of the end of Barca’s most serious financial problems. Laporta made a high-risk move, the kind of decision that a president sometimes has to make, and I think he’ll feel with the passing of time that he was right to do so – particularly with Barca winning three of the last four La Liga titles.<\/span><\/p>\n “I still believe it would have been better to review the spending and avoid some of the deals that he did. I think avoiding some of the signings he made would have saved Barca some money, and meant that they would haven’t have to sell future Liga rights. <\/span><\/p>\n “We still don’t know exactly what will happen further down the line.
