While speculation already rages around who Chelsea\u2019s next manager will be, the more immediate problem is who can lead them to the end of the season. Damien Duff offers an excellent option.<\/p>\n
Chelsea have been left with a gaping void in the dugout following the sacking of Liam Rosenior<\/b>. Calum McFarlane has stepped up from the U21 job to fill the role on an interim basis, but the Stamford Bridge have their own answer to Michael Carrick to call upon in the closing weeks of the season.<\/p>\n
The Blues are faced with a similar scenario to the one that Manchester United face when Ruben Amorim was sacked in January. Any permanent appointment at this stage of the campaign would feel rushed, and the long-term stability of the project is of critical importance.<\/p>\n
United answered this problem by appointing the unattached Carrick to the job until the end of the season. It has proven a roaring success, with the Red Devils on course to claim a Champions League spot and the former England midfielder destined for the role permanently<\/b>.<\/p>\n Chelsea would be wrong not to consider Damien Duff for a similar role at Stamford Bridge.<\/p>\n The former Ireland winger fits a similar mould to Carrick. He is a Premier League veteran with two titles and nearly 400 appearances to his credit. He also packs significant managerial experience at a lower level, having spent four years in charge of Shelbourne in the League of Ireland.<\/p>\n Granted, this is not the same level as Middlesbrough, but he also worked successfully under Stephen Kenny with Ireland \u2013 which is a pathway that Keith Andrews took before landing the Brentford manager job.<\/p>\n Irish football expert Ronan Murphy<\/b> explained to FootballTransfers<\/b>his accomplishments should not be treated lightly.<\/p>\n \u201cWhen Damien Duff took over Shelbourne, they had just been promoted to the League of Ireland Premier Division. Two seasons later, they were champions,\u201d Murphy explained.<\/p>\n \u201cLooking back on his time managing the Dublin club, Duff admitted that he was ‘running on anger.’ He told Virgin Media just last week that he ‘was just highly emotional. But it was something I felt I had to do to get Shelbourne back to the top, and I felt that if I didn’t do that, then we wouldn’t have won the league. I absolutely stand over that.’<\/p>\n \u201cDuring his tenure at Shels, Duff was spiky with the media, defensive of certain players, singled out others, but above all, was a winner. Shelbourne had been 25\/1 outsiders at the start of the 2024 season and the final matchday ended with a victory that drew the largest ever television audience for a League of Ireland game. Part of this was the Duff appeal, with supporters eager to see what the former Chelsea and Ireland winger would do next.<\/p>\n \u201cDuff himself called the title win a ‘Hollywood’ moment and there was so much drama and attention on the 47-year-old that he became the face of the league rather than any of the players.\u201d<\/p>\n Just as Carrick dismissed the pressure of being Man Utd manager, Duff is likely to have a similar impact at Chelsea.<\/p>\n Murphy continues: \u201cHis stature in the game as one of the best players in the Premier League during his time at Chelsea means that he will not have any problems with the egos currently undermining the Chelsea dressing room. After all, he starred under Jose Mourinho opposite Arjen Robben when the Blues won back-to-back Premier League titles.<\/p>\n \u201cThe 100-time Ireland international also has great experience working with youth, having cut his teeth as a coach with Shamrock Rovers U15s, Ireland’s U15s and the Shelbourne Academy before taking the senior head coaching job at Shelbourne. He has been out of work for 10 months, but that was his own decision as he wanted to spend more time with his young family and less time angry at himself and his players.<\/p>\n \u201cBut it looks like he’s ready to come back to coaching. He has already proven himself to be a winner at Chelsea, a winner as a manager, so it seems like the perfect combination to bring him back to Stamford Bridge.\u201d<\/p>\n Chelsea owner Behdad Eghbali has stressed that the Blues need to find stability on the managerial front in the coming seasons.
