As First Division football resumed after World War II, Arsenal manager George Allison quickly realised he needed to rebuild his team. <\/strong><\/p>\n

When the 1946\/47 season began, we triumphed in just four of our opening 18 games, so in December Allison pulled off a masterstroke, signing Ronnie Rooke, a 35-year-old striker from Second Division Fulham for \u00a31,000 plus two players. <\/p>\n

Together with Everton veteran Joe Mercer, who joined at the same time, Rooke\u2019s hulking frame would save us from relegation that campaign, and a whole lot more besides.<\/p>\n

If it hadn\u2019t been for the intervention of the war, Rooke could easily have become Fulham\u2019s record goalscorer, as after joining the Craven Cottage club for \u00a3300 in 1936, he finished their top scorer in every season. By the time we came knocking, he\u2019d netted 70 peacetime goals in 105 matches, and countless more in wartime internationals. <\/p>\n

There were numerous colourful descriptions of the towering former RAF physical trainer by his teammates. \u201cWith his hooked nose, he looked like a gangster,\u201d reckoned defender George Male, who added that Rooke possessed \u201ca glare that could turn men to stone.\u201d Forward Reg Lewis recalled Rooke \u201cleaving a dent the size of a small watermelon in the punchbag in the gym.\u201d<\/p>\n

On his Gunners debut, Rooke stopped our rot immediately, plundering the winner against Charlton Athletic to give his new side a 1-0 victory. The tide, and the mood of the club, had changed, and we eventually finished in 13th place.<\/p>\n

Tom Whittaker took over the reins from Allison in June 1947 and we began 1947\/48 in fine style, going undefeated in our first 17 games. Rooke\u2019s stream of goals was steady throughout, and he ended the season with 33 from 42 matches, which still makes him our record holder for the most league goals scored in a postwar season.<\/p>\n

In the race for the championship, Burnley and Preston North End were right on our coattails, as were Matt Busby\u2019s resurgent Manchester United, who\u2019d been runners-up the previous season. Despite some stuttering form in the spring, Rooke\u2019s goals kept us on the straight and narrow. Scoring a brace against Wolves in a 5-2 win, Rooke then followed this up with a hat-trick against Middlesbrough a few weeks later. Male recalled: \u201cI didn\u2019t really think that Ronnie was Arsenal material at first. But the chap never stopped scoring. He could play.\u201d<\/p>\n

We were able to celebrate winning the title in front of their own supporters, with the final game against long-since-relegated Grimsby Town. It turned into an 8-0 drubbing, with Rooke plundering four times, with the Highbury crowd insisting that the champions did two laps of honour before they disappeared down the tunnel. <\/p>\n

There was a sense of post-war faded grandeur about Highbury, with its grubby East and West stands, and Ronnie Rooke – our 36-year-old veteran striking hero – successfully spearheading the unlikeliest of title charges.<\/p>\n
