Last week was quite a week for Manchester United star Kobbie Mainoo.<\/p>\n
After spending 12 months out in the cold under Ruben Amorim, Mainoo has once again established himself as a key figure under Michael Carrick.<\/p>\n
Reports suggested that the midfielder was close to leaving Manchester United in recent months, with SSC Napoli, Arsenal and Chelsea all very interested in his services.<\/p>\n
Fortunately for United, he stayed, and his performances have sky-rocketed in recent months.<\/p>\n
He was outstanding against Brentford on Monday of last week and then signed a new long-term deal at the club just under a week ago.<\/p>\n
Mainoo marked this with another impressive outing versus arch-rivals Liverpool, capping it all off with the match-winner in front of the Stretford End on Sunday afternoon.<\/p>\n
The youngster\u2019s goal already carried great significance as it helped secure United\u2019s place in the Champions League next season.<\/p>\n
What\u2019s more, it sealed a first league double over Liverpool in a decade.<\/p>\n
There was even more meaning to the beautiful strike, though, as the club\u2019s official website has pointed out.<\/p>\n
The site states, \u201ca homegrown product has scored in every season\u201d since the post-War era (1945).<\/p>\n
This record was in huge jeopardy entering the final month of the season, but Mainoo\u2019s brilliance has kept the streak alive for another season.<\/p>\n
The likes of Sir Bobby Charlton and Ryan Giggs contributed massively to this run over the years, with Sammy McIlroy bridging the gap between the two players.<\/p>\n
The website states that the record was probably most at risk in the 2014\u20132015 season, but James Wilson\u2019s goal against Queens Park Rangers saved the day.<\/p>\n
With talented attackers like JJ Gabriel, Chido Odi, Shea Lacey and Kai Rooney coming through the academy, this record will hopefully be safe for many years to come.<\/p>\n
The club is also known for the highly impressive streak of having an academy player in every matchday squad since 1937.<\/p>\n
