It would be safe to say that Enzo Maresca was not the most popular figure amongst the supporters while he was managing Chelsea. But by now, there has to be a recognition that he did a tremendous job. And the fact that he is widely expected to replace Pep Guardiola at Manchester City someday just goes to show how highly he is regarded in footballing circles.<\/p>\n
Maresca\u2019s appointment was met with the same doubts that had surrounded the arrival of Liam Rosenior. But the Italian managed to deliver success, which the English manager completely failed at.<\/p>\n
In his debut season, working with this young squad, he won the Conference League and the Club World Cup while also securing Champions League qualification. For a while, it had fans thinking that BlueCo had gotten it right all along. <\/p>\n
Six months later, Maresca was gone. And what has followed might be the worst run of form in Chelsea history. But why exactly did the Italian leave? Well, there seem to be three reasons behind it.<\/p>\n
According to a report from Nizaar Kinsella on BBC Sport, Maresca left following a dispute encompassing transfers, his salary and what was perceived as medical department meddling in his use of players.<\/p>\n
Every Chelsea fan will agree that Maresca was not backed in the summer. It was a golden opportunity for them to take the next step. Instead, the club brought in a bunch of players who have made little to no impact.<\/p>\n
Joao Pedro has been a success story. Jorrel Hato has grown into the team over the season after a poor start. But other than that, there has been no real impact. Alejandro Garnacho, Jamie Gittens and Liam Delap have all flopped. The Facundo Buonanotte signing never made sense in the first place and he was sent back from his loan spell in the middle of the season.<\/p>\n
As for the medical department, Chelsea do deserve some credit for improving the fitness level of Reece James. But at the same time, they also need to figure out why so many are taking place in the first place. Prevention is better than cure.<\/p>\n
The first thing Chelsea need to do is make sure they give their next manager more say on transfers. At the end of the day, they are the ones who will be using them. So, they must agree with bringing them in. Otherwise, you just risk derailing the career of someone who you\u2019ve invested in heavily without getting any returns. Nobody wins.<\/p>\n
Also, the manager should have the first say when it comes to team selection. That being said, of course, medical advice should always be given priority.<\/p>\n
Chelsea cannot afford to get their appointment wrong again. And even if they hire the right man, they will also need to provide him with the right conditions to make sure he succeeds.
