Seventeen defeats from 35 Premier League matches is worrying enough from a West Ham United perspective.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Even more damaging, though, is the nature of some of those defeats.<\/p>\n

The tone was set in August. Sunderland and then Chelsea put eight goals past the Hammers in matchdays one and two; Graham Potter\u2019s job becoming untenable before the Halloween masks had even hit the supermarket shelves.<\/p>\n

West Ham have improved defensively under Nuno Espirito Santo, thanks largely to the excellence of Axel Disasi and Konstantinos Mavropanos. Even still, when West Ham United lose, they often lose pretty badly.<\/p>\n

That is one of the oddest things about this side. West Ham have recorded Europa League-chasing numbers as well as five clean sheets in eleven matches since Disasi joined. Yet, in the midst of an impressive run, two of their three losses have seen the Hammers ship three and five goals.<\/p>\n

In addition to Sunderland and Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, Wolves, Liverpool and most recently Brentford have beaten the Hammers by three-or-more goal margin in 2025\/26. <\/p>\n

Should they suffer a 3-0 loss at home to Arsenal on Sunday \u2013 Mikel Arteta is taking his Champions League finalists to the London Stadium \u2013 this would equal a very unwanted record from their last relegation campaign.<\/p>\n

West Ham finished rock bottom under Avram Grant in 2010\/11. A season which started with a 3-0 thrashing at Villa Park ended with a 3-0 home defeat by Sunderland. <\/p>\n

The Hammers lost eight games by a three-or-more goal margin that season, compared to seven so far this.<\/p>\n

Losing heavily to a Liverpool, a Man City or even a Chelsea is understandable, in certain circumstances. But doing so against the worst Tottenham side in generations? An already-doomed Wolves who doubled their points tally in one remarkable 45 minute burst when West Ham travelled to Molineux in mid-January.<\/p>\n

This goes some way to explaining why West Ham\u2019s goal difference \u2013 minus 19 \u2013 is so much worse than the teams around them at the bottom of the table. Already one point clear in 17th, Spurs have an extra advantage in that their<\/em> goal difference is ten goals better off.<\/p>\n

In those seven defeats, the Hammers shipped 25 goals while scoring only twice themselves.<\/p>\n
