Speaking to BetKing, Hamann argued that Chelsea’s young squad lacks the composure that only seasoned pros can bring, pointing to the 3-0 defeat against Brighton as a clear example of a side that simply falls apart under pressure. His solution was simple, and that’s sign Andy Robertson on a free transfer.

‘I think Chelsea need experience,’ Hamann told BetKing. ‘If you’ve got good young players, you need experienced players to bring them on

‘Sometimes when things go badly, as they have now, the run of form is dreadful, you need experienced players who can calm young players down, where a young player looks up, and somebody says to him, “Listen, lad, don’t worry about it, we’ll be fine.”

‘I don’t think they’ve got that. So what you see with them now is that when they go behind, they fall apart. The most blatant example was probably against Brighton (when Chelsea lost 3-0).

‘A player like Andy Robertson, they should take him in a heartbeat. I think he’s exactly the type of player Chelsea needs or is crying out for. With one or two more experienced players, they’ve got to give themselves a chance. I don’t think the way the team is put together, they give themselves a chance.

‘Andy Robertson, I’d take him at Chelsea in a heartbeat if he was interested.’

Robertson, 32 years old, will leave Liverpool at the end of the season when his contract expires, meaning he won’t cost a penny this summer. Hamann said he would take Robertson at Chelsea “in a heartbeat,” describing him as exactly the type of player the club desperately need.

Robertson’s departure looks certain, with journalist David Lynch calling it “a certainty that he will go.” Atletico Madrid, Napoli, and Juventus are all interested, so Chelsea would need to move fast. Robertson himself confirmed there was no contract on the table from Liverpool, making the split mutual rather than bitter.

In the 2025/26 Premier League season, the Scot has conceded 11 goals across 23 appearances, keeping eight clean sheets and averaging nearly a goal conceded every 99 minutes, which are solid numbers for a backup left-back. His 2.56 clearances per 90 minutes show he still reads the game well, even if his 0.99 tackles per 90 suggests he has lost a bit of pace from his peak years.

Fernández Starts | 4-2-3-1 Chelsea XI to win three points against Liverpool

Would Robertson actually fix what has gone wrong at Chelsea?

Chelsea have lost 13 times in the league this season, more than newly-promoted Leeds and Sunderland. Their six consecutive league defeats match a run not seen since 1993, leaving them ninth in the table with European football looking unlikely.

Robertson would bring a winner’s mentality and vocal leadership to a dressing room that clearly lacks both, which counts for a lot. However, signing a 32-year-old who spent most of this season on the bench at Liverpool isn’t going to fix Chelsea’s defensive shape overnight.

Big Injury Setback as 16 players set to miss Liverpool vs Chelsea clash

Robertson is still great going forward, and a top-tier communicator, but Chelsea need a complete rebuild, not just one veteran signing. Robertson could help settle things down for 2026/27, but he is part of the solution, not the whole solution. Chelsea must get this summer right.

More Chelsea Stories from Scorzo

Chelsea are crying out for Robertson, and the stats back it up Chelsea need experience,…

[4

post-5643","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-chelsea
["GET
