Callum Wilson\u2019s disallowed goal in West Ham\u2019s 1-0 defeat to Arsenal has been overshadowed by another crucial moment.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Whereas Wilson\u2019s strike would have been an equaliser, Mateus Fernandes could have given the Hammers the lead.<\/p>\n

He played a superb one-two with Pablo Felipe and had a glorious opportunity to score from just a few yards out.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, Fernandes shot straight at Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya in what could prove to be a season-defining miss. <\/p>\n

Ian Wright and Roy Keane react in disbelief to Mateus Fernandes\u2019 miss<\/h2>\n

Mateus Fernandes probably took one too many touches as he bore down on David Raya in the Arsenal net.<\/p>\n

By getting closer to the goalkeeper, Fernandes gave himself less room to place the ball on either side of Raya.<\/p>\n

However, the West Ham midfielder could still have passed the ball into the far corner or through Raya\u2019s legs.<\/p>\n

Instead, Fernandes aimed for the near post and lifted the ball into the Arsenal goalkeeper\u2019s outstretched foot.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe has to score. The goalkeeper is getting all the credit, but he has to score,\u201d Roy Keane said on Sky Sports after the game.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, former Arsenal striker Ian Wright explained where Fernandes went wrong in failing to take his chance.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course, David Raya is in the way, but he should not have any chance of saving that,\u201d Wright added. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe could flick it into his right foot, but he takes another touch. The goalkeeper was rooted; he literally can\u2019t move if you play that to his right side. <\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cNo one is saying that it\u2019s not an unbelievable save, but he\u2019s given him an opportunity to save it. He should not have done that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Having missed his chance to put the Hammers 1-0 up with 10 minutes to go, Leandro Trossard scored moments later.<\/p>\n

Wilson\u2019s disallowed goal in injury time meant that Arsenal came away from the London Stadium with a controversial victory.<\/p>\n

West Ham must now rely on Leeds and\/or Chelsea doing them a favour by beating Tottenham in the next week.<\/p>\n
