Chelsea are now looking at yet another unsuccessful season as they currently sit ninth in the Premier League. They are gearing up to face Manchester City in the FA Cup final where the Blues are undoubtedly the underdogs. With Pep Guardiola leaving out the likes of Erling Haaland, Rayan Cherki and Jeremy Doku against Crystal Palace, it is quite clear that they are taking that game very seriously despite still being in the title race as well.<\/p>\n
Even spending north of a billion pounds since the BlueCo takeover, the Blues now see themselves going into the upcoming transfer window with a need to further strengthen several areas of their squad. It could even exceed last summer\u2019s figures.<\/p>\n
BlueCo have not been afraid to splash out on players so far. But the club\u2019s recent losses could have a negative effect on their transfer plans. And their problems might just be starting.<\/p>\n
Now, another worrying update has been brought out by former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson (via Football Insider), where he explained how failing to qualify for the Champions League could hand the Blues a loss in the region of \u00a3100 million going into the next season. He said:<\/p>\n
\n\u201cThey take a hit of let\u2019s say \u00a380m if they\u2019re in let\u2019s say the Conference League, and maybe they take a hit of \u00a370m if they\u2019re in the Europa League. Obviously, it\u2019s damaging for them on a one-off basis.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
He also went on to add:<\/p>\n
\n\u201cThere will be a commercial impact, so maybe they lose \u00a320-30m.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
Will it affect the Blues\u2019 summer plans?<\/h2>\n
Despite all the alarming reports, BlueCo are unlikely to hit the panic button yet, but one thing is for sure, the board should definitely re-evaluate their transfer strategy this summer. After going through three out of four unsuccessful campaigns, the need to change things is clear.<\/p>\n
The Blues are also likely to add some generous transfer money to their treasury from some exits which might take place after the end of this campaign. Players like Enzo Fernandez, Nicolas Jackson, Marc Cucurella, Axel Disasi, Benoit Badiashile and Liam Delap could be on their way out of Stamford Bridge this summer. Although, ideally you would want to keep a few of those names.<\/p>\n
Can Chelsea really qualify for the Champions League?<\/h2>\n
Now if Aston Villa are able to win the Europa League final against Freiburg and finish fifth, the Premier League will be handed a sixth Champions League direct qualification spot. The Blues are currently six points adrift of sixth-placed Bournemouth and with only two games left to play this season, it is highly unlikely that they will feature in Europe\u2019s elite competition next season.<\/p>\n
