This FA Cup final on 16 May 2026 at Wembley Stadium is absolutely massive for a club that desperately need a trophy to prove their massive, multi-year rebuild is actually working.

In my view, they will go with a 4-2-3-1 setup: Robert Sánchez in goal; a back four of Malo Gusto, Trevoh Chalobah, Levi Colwill, and Marc Cucurella; Reece James and Moisés Caicedo pairing up in midfield; and an attacking trio of Cole Palmer, Enzo Fernández, and Pedro Neto playing right behind lone striker João Pedro. It is a sharp, sensible lineup, and I honestly don’t think McFarlane has much room to try anything else.

Why does the defensive shape tell the whole story?

The back four is pretty much set in stone because of Chelsea’s nightmare run of injuries and suspensions. Mykhaylo Mudryk is suspended, while Alejandro Garnacho, Estêvão, and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens are all out injured. That strips McFarlane of four wide attackers at the worst possible time.

Chalobah steps into a massive role next to Colwill, a centre-back partnership that has looked solid and calm in big moments this season. Gusto brings pure pace and direct running down the right, while Cucurella, who has quietly become one of the most reliable left-backs in the league, provides defensive discipline and the occasional run forward.

Behind them, Sánchez brings plenty of big-game experience, and his shot-stopping has looked much sharper as the season has gone on. Crucially, this Chelsea defence leaked three goals when these sides met at Stamford Bridge back in April, so the back line is under serious pressure to step it up on Saturday.

Back in training – Arsenal handed massive injury boost before Burnley clash

How do Palmer and Caicedo hold the key to Chelsea’s ambitions?

Reece James and Moisés Caicedo will lock down the midfield in what looks like the most important battle on the pitch. James, wearing the captain’s armband, brings the physical power and forward passing that Chelsea need to transition out of their own half. Meanwhile, Caicedo will be flying around to win the ball back, right where City love to start their passing moves.

Just ahead of them sits the man of the hour: Cole Palmer. He is carrying Chelsea’s creative spark almost entirely by himself with so many players out, and his incredible 2026 form makes him the clear match-winner if Chelsea want to lift the trophy.

Fernández will look to find space between City’s midfield and defence to link up play, while Neto’s speed on the right should stretch City’s defence wide. Up front, João Pedro will lead the line with real aggression, fighting to hold up the ball and bring his teammates into play rather than just waiting for a chance to shoot.

Haaland Starts | 4-2-3-1 Manchester City Predicted lineup against Chelsea

The Chelsea predicted starting lineup against Manchester City shows a team trying to field the strongest side possible despite missing key players. Even though their league form has slipped lately, with three losses in a row before a draw against Liverpool last weekend, this FA Cup final is a totally blank slate for McFarlane’s side to deliver a massive performance at Wembley.

Chelsea predicted starting lineup against Manchester City: Here is how the Blues might field their…

[4

post-9425","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-chelsea
["GET
