Mateus Fernandes has opened up on West Ham\u2019s frustrating 3-1 defeat to Newcastle in the Premier League.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Hammers headed into the game wanting to put Tottenham under more pressure with a victory at St. James\u2019 Park.<\/p>\n

However, Nuno Espirito Santo\u2019s side had a nightmare start, conceding two sloppy goals in the first 18 minutes.<\/p>\n

They showed some fight towards the end of the game, but Taty Castellanos\u2019 screamer was nothing more than a consolation.<\/p>\n

The travelling West Ham supporters were understandably angry with their team\u2019s dismal performance.<\/p>\n

Fernandes spoke openly about the fans\u2019 furious reaction when the players went over to applaud them at full-time.<\/p>\n

Mateus Fernandes reacts after West Ham defeat to Newcastle<\/h2>\n

Fernandes was shocked by West Ham\u2019s \u201cpainful\u201d opening 20 minutes at St. James\u2019 Park after wanting a fast start.<\/p>\n

Nuno\u2019s plans completely fell apart with some shocking defending, which gave the Hammers a mountain to climb in the second half.<\/p>\n

Fernandes refused to blame the Portuguese manager after the game, blaming himself and his teammates for the result.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe first 20 minutes were so painful for us,\u201d he told Sky Sports. \u201cWe are trying to do one thing, and when we arrived, we did the other thing. <\/p>\n

\u201cThey scored the chance, and after that, we tried to create and just scored one goal.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have this week to believe, we just need to believe. It\u2019s our responsibility, and we need to do much better.<\/p>\n

Fernandes gave a reasonable answer when asked about the supporters voicing their frustration at full-time.<\/p>\n

He accepted that the Hammers\u2019 display deserved criticism and looked ahead to a nervy wait until Spurs play Chelsea.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course (I understand), we didn\u2019t play with full fight and spirit, like we did against Arsenal,\u201d Fernandes continued. \u201cWe missed everything: the fight, the energy and the second balls. <\/p>\n

\u201cVery hard to think about the future. One game to try and be good. It is difficult, but it is football; anything can happen.\u201d<\/p>\n
