Although some facets of Harry Bradshaw\u2019s early life and career are shrouded in mystery, his historic achievements as first-team manager at both Burnley and Woolwich Arsenal remain highly significant. <\/strong><\/p>\n

There were actually two other professional footballers and a famous rugby star of the same name in the early 20th century, which perhaps explains some of the confusion surrounding him. <\/p>\n

Born in 1853 \u2013 although his precise birthdate is unknown \u2013 Bradshaw became Burnley\u2019s inaugural manager in 1894. Some sources state that he was a former Clarets player, although official Burnley sites suggest he never played the game. Relegated from Division One in 1896\/97, the Turf Moor outfit then bounced straight back and finished third in 1898\/99, their best top-flight finish at that time.<\/p>\n

His move to Second Division Woolwich Arsenal in 1899 therefore came as something of a shock, particularly to the Burnley Express, which noted tersely: \u2018\u2026his removal from Burnley to Woolwich will be a severe blow to the BFC.\u2019 Treading water in Plumstead, and facing significant financial upheaval, Woolwich Arsenal appeared a less-than-glamorous destination, and progress under Bradshaw at the Manor Ground was slow but steady. <\/p>\n

In 1899\/00, Woolwich finished eighth, then seventh, fourth, third and, in 1903\/04, second, resulting in Woolwich Arsenal\u2019s first-ever promotion to the top-flight. Historical sources suggest that his team adopted a \u2018Scottish style of play\u2019, characterised by short passing and intricate footwork. <\/p>\n

Bradshaw signed several noteworthy players, including Percy Sands, a loyal servant who\u2019d play at Highbury after the club moved to north London in 1913. Jimmy Jackson, a Scottish-born player who played Australian Rules football after his family emigrated, was another crowd favourite, while goalkeeper Jimmy Ashcroft, who kept a remarkable 17 clean sheets out of 34 in the 1901\/02 season, became our first full international, winning three caps in 1903.<\/p>\n

On March 12, 1900, Bradshaw\u2019s team defeated Loughborough 12-0 in front of just 600 supporters, on a Monday afternoon, which remains our record league victory. The Midlands side was so hard up that the hosts lent the visitors the money to travel down. Ironically, our heaviest defeat had come four years earlier in 1896 when the same club drubbed us 8-0. <\/p>\n

Under Bradshaw\u2019s astute leadership, Manor Ground crowds grew steadily, from 3,000-5,000 crowds in his first season, to 10,000-15,000 crowds when the team was pushing for promotion from the Second Division. Several lower-league sides, such as Loughborough, eventually folded, but Woolwich Arsenal prevailed.<\/p>\n

Remarkably, Bradshaw never oversaw a top-flight Woolwich Arsenal team, as he departed in the 1904 close season to join Southern League Fulham. No reason was ever given for this. He later became secretary of the Southern League, and passed away in 1924. <\/p>\n

But thanks to this astute project manager, whose sons Joe and William both signed (but never played) for us, Woolwich Arsenal finally reached the promised land of First Division football.<\/p>\n
