Chelsea fans reacted as Premier League referee Anthony Taylor announced his retirement. One of the most prominent faces in the refereeing world, he has officiated in over 400 English top-flight games over 16 seasons.

Taylor was most recently in action at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Mexico and Canada, overseeing eventual champions Spain’s 1-0 Round of 16 win over Potugal, where substitute Mikel Merino scored a stoppage time winner.

Having participated in two FIFA World Cups and the European Championship, the 47-year-old announced his retirement on Tuesday (July 21), saying (as per ESPN):

“Officiating at the elite level has been an immense privilege, but the pressure is intense and the scrutiny is constant. The time is now right to step aside and look forward to transitioning to the next chapter of my career.

“I want to express my deepest gratitude to my two assistants Gary (Beswick) and Adam (Nunn), my refereeing colleagues and everyone connected with the game for all their support over the years. Most importantly, I want to thank my family and friends for their unwavering support throughout the immense sacrifices this career has demanded.”

Blues fans reacted to the development, with one reckoning it’s a bigger news than attacker Aljejandro Garnacho’s immiment exit:

“We’re so back.. this is a bigger news for us than Garnacho leaving and Rogers signing hahaha,” one tweeted.

“We’re winning the league,signs are there,” commented another.

The Blues fanbase has had a strained relationship with Taylor over the years, with the Englishman making several game-changing decisions.

They include 14 yellow cards in a Premier League game against Bournemouth in 2024, Reece James’ red card at Liverpool, and some unpunished offences by the opposition in the Blues’ 2-1 FA Cup final loss to Arsenal in 2020.

Aston Villa in reported talks with Chelsea attacker Alejandro Garnacho

Chelsea attacker Alejandro Garnacho is reportedly on the verge of leaving Stamford Bridge just a season after ariving from Manchester United/, with the Blues considering the Argentine surplus to requirements.

The former Red Devils man managed a solitary goal in the Premier League last season. He’s now part of a squad overhaul under new boss Xabi Alonso, with Aston Villa said to be interested in his services.

As per The Sun, Villa are nterested to snap up Garnacho initially on loan for a year rather, with Morgan Rogers moving to Stamford Bridge on a club record £117 million move. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has reported an official bid submitted by Villa for the player in a loan deal with a buy option.
