Danny Welbeck could be the next arrival at Stamford Bridge, as Chelsea open transfer news for the Brighton striker, who is keen on a fresh challenge at 35.
Danny Welbeck deal takes shape as Chelsea eye experience
Talks are underway between Chelsea and Brighton over a potential move for striker Danny Welbeck, with both clubs open to completing a deal this summer. As reported by BBC, there is real optimism inside Stamford Bridge that terms can be agreed soon. The move fits a wider plan from owner Behdad Eghbali, who admitted in April that the club’s transfer approach needed a “tweak,” after years of focusing only on younger signings.
Welbeck scored a career-high 13 league goals in 37 appearances for Brighton last season, taking his overall tally to 51 goals in 201 games since joining from Watford back in 2020. Those numbers explain why the Blues see him as ready-made support up front, rather than a long-term project. Brighton have not commented on the talks, though Welbeck signed a fresh one-year deal in March that runs until 2027.
Welbeck’s stats in the 2025-26 season, as per FOTMOB:
| Competitions | Matches | Goals | Assists |
| Premier League | 37 | 13 | 1 |
| FA Cup | 1 | 1 | 0 |
| EFL Cup | 2 | 0 | 1 |
Chelsea’s forward line set for a shake-up
Any Danny Welbeck arrival would add further competition to an already crowded Chelsea attack. Joao Pedro remains the club’s clear first-choice striker under new head coach Xabi Alonso. Liam Delap, Marc Guiu, Nicolas Jackson and Emmanuel Emegha are all still on the books, though their futures now look uncertain. Jackson has returned from a loan spell at Bayern Munich but seems open to a fresh start, with Aston Villa reportedly keen. He managed just two goals in 14 appearances during that loan spell, a return that has done little to strengthen his case for regular football at Stamford Bridge. Guiu could also leave this summer, with Chelsea said to value him at around £25 million.
Signing a proven finisher like Welbeck would give Alonso a different option from the bench, especially in matches that need experience late on. His movement in the box and composure in front of goal could help Chelsea see out tight games, particularly when protecting a narrow lead in the Premier League.

A shift in transfer strategy under Alonso
A move for Danny Welbeck would sit alongside other recent business pointing toward more experienced signings. As reported by ESPN, the club has also tried to sign Sunderland midfielder Granit Xhaka, though the Black Cats have refused to sell their captain. Morgan Rogers, a club-record signing worth £117 million, still fits the plan of recruiting younger players, yet he arrives with genuine top-flight football experience already. Chelsea are also closing in on defender Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace, in a deal reportedly worth £52 million.
Chelsea finished only tenth in the Premier League last season, and youthful talent alone did not solve their problems on the pitch. Welbeck and Lacroix are the kind of signings a manager makes when he wants results now, not in three years. Alonso knows what experience can do in the biggest moments. He was on the pitch for Liverpool’s comeback against AC Milan in the 2005 Champions League final, one of the greatest turnarounds the competition has ever seen. With pre-season underway, how these deals shape the squad before the new campaign could define Chelsea’s season.
