Chelsea are “still pushing” to sign Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott, according to reports.

Writing on his Substack, journalist Simon Phillips said that the Blues have “gone back into discussions” with the Cherries in an attempt to find a breakthrough.

An opening offer (worth £60m upfront and another £15m in add-ons) has reportedly been rejected already, but there is clearly hope that a deal can be struck.

Scott has less than two years left on his contract at the Vitality Stadium, and he is said to have recently rejected a new deal, which could accelerate his departure from the South Coast.

Why do Chelsea want the midfielder?

Scott made a big impression playing in a deeper-lying role under Andoni Iraola last season, and it led to him being called up by his country. Speaking back in November, England manager (and former Chelsea boss) Thomas Tuchel was effusive in his praise:

“He did an excellent job in midfield together with Elliot Anderson (at the Under 21 European Championships), who is now a regular starter for us – he was very impressive. Then he took another step and becomes a regular starter for AFC Bournemouth, and they are in the top third of the league.”

“They are over-performing constantly, and he is a starter for them. He puts the intensity in, and he gets his minutes.”

Scott does have other suitors

Despite the limited time remaining on the 22-year-old’s contract, Bournemouth know they can hold out for a sizeable sum due to the number of teams interested in securing his services.

Arsenal made a formal enquiry for Scott last month, while Manchester United and Manchester City have also been linked with the player.

There is a feeling that a bid worth £80m may be required to sign the midfielderso we shall have to wait and see whether the Blues are willing to go that high.
