Thomas Tuchel surely agrees with Gary Cahill verdict on ‘tremendous’ Chelsea star
Gary Cahill has explained why Chelsea centre-back Trevoh Chalobah deserves to be called up to Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the 2026 World Cup.
Chalobah has been a rare beam of light in a dismal campaign for the Blues, having established himself as a consistent performer in the heart of defence.
The 26-year-old has made 44 appearances in all competitions, and most recently started alongside Tosin Adarabioyo at Wembley as Chelsea booked their place in the FA Cup final following a 1-0 win over Leeds United.
A figure of consistency and a hulking presence in defence, Chalobah has impressed in difficult times for the club, and he hopes his form will be rewarded with a call-up to Tuchel’s World Cup squad this summer.

Competition is strong in England’s centre-back position. Marc Guehi, Ezri Konsa and Harry Maguire are the likely candidates to start their opening group game against Croatia on June 17, while John Stones, Fikayo Tomori and Dan Burn all featured in last month’s squad.
Chalobah was due for his first Three Lions call-up in April before an injury picked up against Paris Saint-Germain ruled him out of contention, but former Blues defender Cahill expects him to make the cut for the World Cup in June.
In an interview with The Standard, Cahill explained his reasons for selecting the former Crystal Palace loanee, citing his “tremendous attitude” as a key factor.
“His attitude since he came back from Crystal Palace has been tremendous, the way he’s produced the performances he has for Chelsea. He knows Trevoh well, knows his personality, knows he can rely on Trevoh in certain aspects. He’s in with a shout. He’s performed very well this year.”
The Englishman has four Premier League games and an FA Cup final remaining to prove why he belongs at the World Cup.
Chalobah’s stats this season
It’s been an awful campaign for Chelsea on the whole, and they could still miss out on European football if they lose the FA Cup final to Man City and continue to drop down the league table.
Chalobah, of course, is one of the few players who can hold his head high, with the statistics painting a strong picture of his influence.
According to FotMob, the towering defender ranks in the top 13 per cent of Premier League players for possession won in the final third and top 28 per cent for recoveries.
Not only that, but Chalobah has also been a calming presence in possession, placing in the top eight per cent for successful passes and top 13 per cent for touches per 90.
Combining all of the above attributes should see Chalobah earn a call-up to England’s World Cup squad and show Tuchel his class.
