Premier League Giants Enter Race To Sign Top Six Superstar

Following the sacking of Liam Rosenior this week, it’s safe to say that Chelsea have gone almost completely off the rails this season. They sit eighth in the Premier League table, having lost their last five Premier League games in a row.

As such, unsurprisingly, some of the Blues’ top players are angling for a move away from the club. One of them is Enzo Fernandez, who has seemingly made his intentions clear – he doesn’t want to remain at Chelsea as things stand.

Being one of the best midfielders in the world, he has had no shortage of potential suitors. Recently, however, one of Chelsea’s Premier League rivals have thrown their hat into the ring – none other than Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

What has been said regarding Enzo Fernandez’s situation?

According to a report from The Athletic, City are ‘considering’ a move for Fernandez ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window. They have other targets in mind, such as Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, but Fernandez remains amongst the leading candidates to bolster their midfield ranks.

Despite this, City will face major competition for his signature from some of the biggest clubs in the world. Earlier in the month, OneFootball reported that Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid both want to bring him on board – PSG are also thought to be interested in a potential move.

Earlier in the season, Fernandez said he would ‘really like’ to play in Madrid. This landed him in a spot of bother with Rosenior, who dropped him from the squad for a couple of games as a result.

What would Enzo Fernandez add to Manchester City?

An excellent passer of the ball with an acute eye for goal, Fernandez is an adaptable midfielder. He usually plays at the heart of midfield, but he can also function as an attacking midfielder or as a defensive midfielder.

Generally, however, he works best as an attacking central midfielder as part of a midfield three. This should work nicely for City – Guardiola generally field three players in the middle of the park in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 setup.

He is always looking to receive a pass and get things moving. While Fernandez isn’t the best defender in the world, his composure on the ball and range of passing generally makes up for it – it’s very rare that you’ll see him caught in possession.

Furthermore, City will need a new central midfielder ahead of next season. With Rodri looking likely to depart the club, he will need replacing – Fernandez could slot nicely into his role of a deep-lying playmaker.

Furthermore, Bernardo Silva is also set to leave the club in the summer. If they go unreplaced, City will be left short of options and creativity in central midfield. As such, it makes a lot of sense for them to target Fernandez in the transfer window.

He certainly won’t be cheap, being under contract at Stamford Bridge until 2032, but City should have enough financial muscle to twist the Blues’ arm.
