“Certain things don’t go together”

Petr Cech has urged Chelsea to change their transfer strategy, saying that they need to start looking to win things quickly. He believes that the youngsters’ only philosophy is good, but they need to add experienced players too.

Speaking to The Athletic, Cech said that the club needs to do better in the transfer market if they want to win the Premier League and UEFA Champions League. He said that the young players are important, but the right mix is missing at the club.

“You have to look at what you want to achieve. You can have young, talented players, and you can win, but it’s very rare that you manage to do that. If you concentrate on bringing young, talented players and make them better, that’s one thing, but if you are to win every season and compete every season, that does not go together. You have to change your philosophy. Certain things don’t go together because, in order to win a Champions League or a Premier League… these are really tough competitions, and you have to be consistent.”

Cech believes that the club do not have a strong core that can lead the young players. He believes that the experienced players always step up when it gets tough and said:

“You need to have a strong core of the team. And then you can bring young, talented players who will grow faster and then will be held by the experienced players to help navigate them through difficult times when they come.”

“When the majority of your squad is young and doesn’t have experience with going through difficult times, they almost look at each other thinking, ‘OK, who’s going to help me?’ It might be difficult for them. You need to realise what stage you are in, and what is needed.”

Chelsea have just one player over 28 this season, Tosin Adarabioyo, and he has not been a regular starter.

Petr Cech has admitted that Chelsea have changed drastically from the time he was at the club. He believes that the strategy is not what he associated with the club and said:

“It’s different. Maybe if I were there on a daily basis, I would (recognise Chelsea). I would see it differently. From what you see from the outside, I don’t think you can compare because of the vision and the way that the club operates, how they want to do things. It’s completely different from how it was.”

Cech left Chelsea soon after the takeover was complete, resigning from his role as the club’s Technical and Performance Advisor.
