Chelsea hold talks sign Francesco Farioli

Chelsea’s managerial search ahead of the summer transfer window has taken another intriguing turn with reports suggesting that Francesco Farioli, the current head coach of FC Porto, has emerged as a name of interest for the Stamford Bridge hot seat.

The Italian, who has enjoyed a breakthrough season in Portugal, is understood to be on an evolving shortlist as the Blues weigh up several options to succeed Liam Rosenior, who was dismissed earlier in the campaign.

Farioli has rapidly climbed football’s coaching ranks in recent years. After spells in Turkey, France with Nice and a stint with Ajax, he took over at Porto in the summer of 2025 and has since guided the Portuguese giants to the Primeira Liga title in his debut season — a remarkable achievement for a 37-year-old manager.

His stock has risen significantly thanks to Porto’s domestic success and his reputation as a progressive tactician who blends possession-based play with disciplined defensive organisation.

Despite these credentials, multiple reports — including from respected transfer insider Nicolò Schira — now suggest that Farioli has ruled himself out of the running, preferring to see out his project at Porto rather than jump to the Premier League this summer.

CHELSEA’s interest in Farioli makes sense on paper. He represents a younger, modern coaching profile compared to many traditional options, with an emphasis on building from the back and tactical flexibility — qualities that align with the club’s evolving footballing philosophy. Furthermore, his ability to quickly win title success at Porto would appeal to a club desperate for stability and strong leadership.

Why he might not be the best option

Farioli has never managed in England. Jumping straight into one of the world’s most demanding leagues at a club experiencing internal instability could prove challenging.

Project continuity concerns – Chelsea’s coaching carousel has been tumultuous in recent seasons, and a manager who has just found success and continuity at Porto might struggle to adapt to the pressures and high turnover culture at Stamford Bridge.

Tactical questions over adaptability – while his possession-based style can be effective, it has also drawn criticism for its similarity to other regimes (and occasional struggles against intense counter-pressing teams in bigger leagues).

With Farioli reportedly prioritising Porto, CHELSEA could well turn their attention elsewhere — possibly to more experienced figures who understand the rigours of the Premier League.
