Chelsea rush into talks to sign Premier League winger following Bayern Munich offer

Chelsea appear to be laying the groundwork ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Blues will be busy during the off-season. Not only are they looking to appoint a new permanent manager following Liam Rosenior’s sacking after just 104 days in charge, but they’re also set to bring in multiple players.

A new centre back with elite-level leadership and a new striker following Liam Delap’s failed move from Ipswich Town last year will be the priorities, but a new winger is also a possibility.

Alejandro Garnacho has flopped during his first season following his £40 million transfer from Manchester United. The Argentine has struggled to make the left-flank his own, and, as a result, could move on.

Consequently, Chelsea have been heavily linked with Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon, and it seems they’ve stepped up their efforts in recent days.

Along with Sandro Tonali, Gordon is likely to be one of the first big names to leave St. James’ Park this summer.

The Magpies are entering a period of transition and their failure to qualify for Europe next season could see some of their best players moved on. There are also question marks over Eddie Howe’s long-term future.

And when it comes to Gordon, according to Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Bayern Munich have already presented an offer, which includes a bumper five year contract, to the 25-year-old.

Following Bayern Munich’s approach, Chelsea-focused journalist Simon Phillips has revealed the Blues have begun talks with Gordon’s agents.

It remains unknown what Gordon’s preference is, but considering Bayern’s standing in Europe as well as the prospect of playing alongside England teammate Harry Kane, it would be reasonable to assume he’d favour a move to the Allianz Arena over Stamford Bridge.

Better options out there

Gordon is a decent player, but for the wages he’d command, he’s probably not worth the investment, especially when reinforcing other positions is far more important.

The former Everton star has hardly set the world alight during his five years in the North East. He’s scored just 39 goals in 152 games in all competitions and has missed nearly 100 days through injury.

Considering how poor the Blues’ recruitment has been since BlueCo took over, it’s important they get their signings this summer right, and Gordon would be anything but a guaranteed success.

Bringing him, no doubt for a huge fee, feels like an unnecessary risk.
