Chelsea’s primary issue might be finding the right manager. But with every ongoing matchday, the problems seem to be beyond that. Xabi Alonso is in high contention to take over at Stamford Bridge, replacing interim manager Calum McFarlane at the end of the season.
The Blues have been poor in the Premier League, with their last win in early March against Aston Villa. Since then, the side has lost six consecutive Premier League games. These defeats pushed them from a potential Champions League spot to 9th in the table.
However, the 1-0 FA Cup semi-final win over Leeds United offered a rare silver lining. A club of such stature cannot afford this decline and must address it immediately.
Recent reports have suggested that talks are ongoing with Xabi Alonso over the Chelsea managerial post. The Spaniard, understandably, wants more control and assurances than previous managers before taking the job.
Alonso to Chelsea?
The former Real Madrid manager’s first task would be to make Chelsea functional in both boxes. Moreover, spending so much money on new players has not translated into results. So the Spaniard should be given time to plan and execute a project.
Unlike Thomas Tuchel, the new coach just cannot transform the youngsters into genuine Champions League contenders. While this is what the sporting directors might dream of, reality is otherwise.
With the former Bayer Leverkusen manager having experience winning major trophies and playing in England, his knowledge of the Premier League will be to the point. However, his style of play will require new additions.
How Alonso’s Perfect XI Could Look
Chelsea needs a back three to replicate Bayer Leverkusen’s success. The energy of Alejandro Grimaldo and Jeremie Frimpong on the flanks, combined with Granit Xhaka anchoring the midfield, turned the system into a winning formula. If similar success is to be achieved, the Blues may have to follow the Alonso blueprint.
GK: Mike Penders
The 20-year-old Belgian could take over Robert Sanchez’s role after he returns from the loan spell at Strasbourg. He is much better with the ball at his feet, which Alonso seems to prefer in his goalkeepers.
CB: Alessandro Bastoni
Having many defenders likely to leave the club could pave the way to bring in the Inter Milan centre-back. And with his growing reputation as one of the best in the world, he would be a huge defensive reinforcement for the side.
CB: Levi Colwill
One of the most important players for the Blues is Colwill. That has become even more evident this season, as he missed the majority of it with an ACL injury. He has returned recently and if his performance levels don’t decline drastically as a result of the issue, he should remain a starter.
CB: Ousmane Diomande
Having the Ivorian behind helps the side play out from the back. Moreover, the Sporting Lisbon youngster helps to turn defence into attack with ease.
CDM: Moises Caicedo
Caicedo might not be a long-pass specialist, but his ability to hold possession is key. He is built more for high-ball recoveries, precise tackling, and aggressive pressing.
CM: Amadou Onana
Chelsea parting with Enzo Fernandez could help bring Onana. The majestic Aston Villa midfielder can bring physical dominance, high-intensity pressing, and the ability to break up play, suiting Alonso’s needs and something the Blues are missing right now.
RWB: Reece James
Even though Alonso is physically demanding, James would be the right pick. Apart from his versatile defending, he provides exceptional crossing by delivering brilliant balls into the box. This might be his best role on the pitch.
LWB: Marc Cucurella
Not a very apt fit, but could be used as an option, as Geovany Quenda would slowly take over as he settles into the team.
RW: Cole Palmer
The Englishman alone could carry Chelsea on his shoulders when his confidence is boosted. Widely regarded as the club’s greatest asset. Besides, Alonso must find a way to restore the player’s confidence.
LW: Anthony Gordon
He would add a new dimension to the frontline with his link-up play. The Newcastle player has the Premier League class and could prove doubters wrong about his quality
ST: João Pedro
The Brazilian has scored 15 goals, making him the side’s top scorer in the league. So, Alonso can work miracles with him when provided accurately.
