Months after criticising Arsenal for celebrating too much against Chelsea, John Terry weighs in on Gunners’ reaction on reaching UCL final

Back in February, Chelsea legend John Terry claimed Arsenal celebrated too much after knocking his former team out of the Carabao Cup in the semi-final stage. With the Gunners now reaching the Champions League final, Terry has once again called Mikel Arteta’s team out for their way of celebrating.

The former England captain labelled the second leg of the Champions League semi-final between Arsenal and Atletico Madrid as a ‘poor game of football’. However, Terry still congratulated the north Londoners for reaching the final.

He said on TikTok (h/t The Mirror):

“I’ve been looking forward to this game all week, especially after the poor game of football last night (between Arsenal and Atletico Madrid). But fair play to Arsenal on making the Champions League final.”

Terry feels the jubilation on display from the players was ‘far too much’ for him to digest. He is of the opinion that players can get excited but should not go overboard, possibly due to the fact that there is still one more game left before the big celebrations can kick in.

The Englishman added:

“By the way, Arsenal way over-celebrated. Far too much for me. Yeah, you’re excited because you make the Champions League final, but over-celebrated a little bit too much for me.”

Arsenal will not be too bothered by the comments made by Terry. They have reached the final of the Champions League for only the second time in their history. The last time they played the final was back in 2006, when they lost to Barcelona.

The Gunners will be hoping to avoid the same fate when they take on Paris Saint-Germain in the final in Budapest on May 30.

PSG ran out 6-5 winners on aggregate against Bayern Munich to set up the final against Arsenal. Notably, the Ligue1 giants were held to a 1-1 draw at the Allianz Arena in the second leg, with the 5-4 win from the first leg helping them progress.

Terry feels Luis Enrique’s men should have had a man sent off in the game. There was a controversial moment when the referee decided not to give a second yellow card to Nuno Mendes and Terry may have been talking about, but he did not take any names or point to a particular incident.

The Chelsea hero hailed the quality of the game. But he couldn’t help but compare it to how his team lost to Barcelona in 2009/10 at Stamford Bridge, a thrilling game where Chelsea were knocked out in the wake of controversial refereeing decisions.

Terry added:

“What a game, what a start to the game this was tonight. How PSG have still got 11 men on the pitch I do not know.

“How PSG have not given away a penalty I do not know. It stinks of Chelsea versus Barcelona 2009/10 at Stamford Bridge where we should have had four or five penalties at least, but great game of football.”

Terry, who missed a decisive penalty in Chelsea’s first-ever Champions League final appearance in 2008, would later win the same trophy with his club in 2012. However, he was suspended for the final in 2012 after a red card against Barcelona in the semi-final second leg.
