Man Utd & Chelsea Suffer Major Blow in Race to Sign PL Star
Manchester United and Chelsea both have their sights set on a move for Newcastle United ace Anthony Gordon – however, a team from the continent are threatening to throw a spanner into the works.
According to a report from Sky Sports, Bayern Munich are interested in a move for the England international and could make an official transfer move for the player during the upcoming summer transfer window.
Columnist Christian Falk has gone as far to say that the Bavarian giants have offered Gordon a five-year contract ahead of the summer.
But why is Gordon being targeted by so many top clubs in the first place? Let’s take a look at his stats from this season to find out why he’s marquee target for some of Europe’s biggest teams.

One may look at these stats and assume that Gordon has had a lacklustre season. He hasn’t been at his best, but he has performed much better in the Champions League than he has domestically.
Gordon scored ten goals and notched up a pair of assists in 12 Champions League games this season – this is why he’s so coveted at the moment.
Who else is looking to sign Anthony Gordon?
Bayern’s entry into the race to sign Gordon certainly set Chelsea and Manchester United back, but they aren’t the only ones who’ve been angling to try and snap him up.
According to CaughtOffside, Arsenal are interested in a move for the player and have ‘held talks’ with his representatives.
Liverpool have a long-standing interest in the player – they were linked with a move for him as far back as his Everton days.
Meanwhile, Barcelona are also looking to bring Gordon on board, according to a report from RAC1 (via GOAL).
Additionally, Manchester City were briefly looking to sign Gordon during the January transfer window, but the Sky Blues’ interest has seemingly cooled in the months that followed.
Who would benefit the most from Gordon’s arrival?
There is an obvious answer to this question – Chelsea have endured a woeful end to the season and are in need of reinforcements up top. A goalscoring winger who can also function as an out-and-out striker, bringing Gordon to Stamford Bridge could be just what the doctor ordered.
However, they aren’t the only team that would benefit greatly from Gordon’s arrival. Arsenal, for example, will be in the hunt for a new left winger – Gabriel Martinelli could leave the club in the summer, as could Leandro Trossard.
Additionally, Manchester United are in need of a natural left winger. Most of their best attacking players either play on the right or through the middle, so Gordon would be a welcomed addition to the squad at Old Trafford.
If Barcelona cannot secure the services of Marcus Rashford on a permanent basis, then Gordon would be a solid replacement – he would, however, have to compete for his spot with the excellent Raphinha. It remains to be seen where he will end up – whatever the case, expect a fierce bidding war.
