Xabi Alonso has emerged as the main candidate to take over at Chelsea ahead of the 2026-27 season, and now, BlueCo have learned of the Spaniard’s stance on taking over.

For a while now, Alonso has been listed alongside Marco Silva and Andoni Iraola as the main candidates to take over at Stamford Bridge. The former Liverpool and Real Madrid star was sacked back in January.

It came after a brilliant start to life at Madrid subsided, with reports suggesting a fallout between Alonso and his main players. Thibaut Courtois has since suggested that those claims were, in fact, inaccurate.

With Alonso keen to return to work, there have been doubts over whether Chelsea could convince the Spaniard to move to Stamford Bridge. Especially with Chelsea’s chances of European football fading fast.

Xabi Alonso is open to taking Chelsea job ahead of the summer

The Blues have set a deadline for appointing their next manager. Marco Silva and Andoni Iraola remain in jobs until the end of the season, and Chelsea want to be able to announce their next boss in a month.

Alonso, meanwhile, is out of work following his Madrid exit. According to the iPaper, Alonso is open to becoming Chelsea’s next manager, and if he does, it promises a different approach from the owners.

Indeed, the report claims that BlueCo are willing to take more of a backseat when it comes to transfers if they can convince Alonso to join the club. It is also seen as a real coup if they can convince him to join.

What Chelsea’s players want when BlueCo appoint a new boss

There are plenty of advocates for Alonso upstairs at Chelsea. The belief is that Liam Rosenior failed at Stamford Bridge because he lacked the CV and the stature to win the squad over. Alonso is different.

Alonso brings with him both an impressive CV as a player and as a manager, given his impressive stint as Madrid manager, albeit brief, and his unbeaten, title-winning season in Germany with Bayer Leverkusen.

There is no doubt that Alonso’s appointment will delight Chelsea fans, even if the majority would pick Cesc Fabregas because of his five years at Chelsea as a player and the work he is doing in Italy with Como.

But for many, Alonso would be their next pick ahead of other managers linked with the vacancy. Iraola and Silva seem a touch safe, given their availability. A return for Jose Mourinho has been downplayed.
