Three of England’s biggest clubs are reportedly chasing the same left-back this summer, and it could spark one of the Premier League’s most intriguing transfer battles.

According to Portuguese outlet A Bola, Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are all keeping tabs on Sporting Lisbon’s Maxi Araujo — a player who has quietly established himself as one of Europe’s finest full-backs this season.

The £69M Question

Sporting won’t let their prize asset leave on the cheap. The Portuguese giants will demand that any club triggers Araujo’s £69 million release clause — a fee that hasn’t scared off any of the three Premier League suitors.

At 26, the Uruguayan is hitting peak years and will command serious competition.

Why Manchester United Hold the Advantage

Of the three clubs, Manchester United look the most compelling destination — and arguably the most logical.

With Luke Shaw’s future uncertain and Patrick Dorgu already picking up injuries, United desperately need a reliable left-back. Araujo ticks every box: quality, experience and hunger for regular minutes.

Crucially, United will be in the Champions League next season — a factor that could prove decisive for any ambitious player weighing up his options.

Chelsea already have Marc Cucurella well-established at left-back, while Spurs boast Destiny Udogie and Djed Spence — and given their turbulent league campaign, splashing £69m on a position already covered seems unlikely.

Verdict

United are the standout suitors. They have the need, the platform and the European football to make Araujo an offer that’s very hard to refuse.
