Chelsea fans will love what Joao Pedro has revealed about Estevao

For all the excitement surrounding Estevao has been focused on his attacking quality but recent comments from Joao Pedro have highlighted something even more important about the young star.

The 19-year-old arrived at Stamford Bridge last summer following a big money move from Palmeiras, and, despite his age, wasted no time becoming a first team regular.

Estevao has performed excellently during his first term in West London. He has reached double figures for goals and assists in just first 36 appearances in all competitions, including scoring three goals in the Champions League.

And in light of what has undoubtedly been an impressive breakthrough for Estevao, his club, and national team, teammate, Pedro, believes the youngster has the mentality required to reach the very top.

João Pedro reveals Estevao’s elite-level mentality

Pedro has admitted that Estevao’s mentality and understanding of the game has taken him by surprise.

Speaking to TNT Sports, the Chelsea striker revealed just how intelligent Estevao is despite the winger only recently turning 19.

“I already said in other interviews that Estevao impressed me a lot.

When he arrived, I didn’t expect someone his age to already think like he thinks.”

Pedro’s comments are a massive compliment to Estevao as they have come from a player who knows exactly what it takes to make the step up having joined himself from mid-table Brighton and Hove Albion a year ago in a deal worth £60 million.

The Premier League is relentless for young stars, particularly when they’re at a club which demands such high standards. Elite-level mentality is usually what separates those who fulfil their potential from those who don’t.

Crucial to overcoming injury setback

It hasn’t all been plain sailing for Estevao during his first season at Stamford Bridge, though.

The teenager’s campaign was cut short after he suffered a hamstring tear last month against Manchester United that has him out for the rest of the season.

Even more cruelly, despite being expected to light up the World Cup later this summer, Chelsea’s number 41 will also miss out for Brazil, and that’s why Pedro’s comments feel particularly important.

There is hope Estevao’s mental resilience will allow him to overcome this adversity and come back even stronger next season, though.

Should he do so, that may prove far more important for his long-term future at Chelsea than any highlight clip or moment of individual brilliance ever could.
