Xabi Alonso appears to be the frontrunner for the Chelsea job, but Joleon Lescott wants to see another name in the Stamford Bridge dugout next season.

Chelsea sacked Liam Rosenior last month and are now looking for a new manager.

Alonso seems prepared to work under Chelsea’s owners despite all of the negative noise surrounding them at the moment. However, it is another Spaniard who has been endorsed by Lescott.

Xabi Alonso or Cesc Fabregas… Who are you taking?👀

Joleon Lescott wants to see Cesc Fabregas at Stamford Bridge

Instead of Alonso, Lescott thinks Cesc Fabregas should be the No.1 candidate to replace Rosenior in the dugout.

Speaking on TNT Sports, the former Manchester City defender said: “There’s a name that I think they should go and get, and I think that’s Cesc Fabregas. But give him the opportunity to develop like Arsenal have done with Mikel Arteta.”

Fabregas has been a huge success at Como, guiding them to European football for the first time in their history.

Como are just five points behind second place with two games to go, meaning that they could still qualify for the Champions League.

Unsurprisingly, then, Fabregas leaving Como for Chelsea would not be straightforward. With Alonso currently out of work, the former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen manager will be easier to land.

Xabi Alonso a safer bet than Cesc Fabregas for now

For as well as Fabregas has done at Como, it is his first managerial job. He does not have as much top-level experience as Alonso, who has already achieved a lot in the game and managed a big changing room.

Things did not work out for the Liverpool legend at Real Madrid, but he was a huge success at Leverkusen.

In the 2023/24 season, Alonso was able to guide Leverkusen to the Bundesliga title and the Europa League final.

In their title-winning campaign, the German club did not lose a single game. In the future, it would be great to see a former Chelsea player like Fabregas in the Stamford Bridge dugout, but Alonso is probably the safer option right now and more attainable. Everything is pointing towards him becoming the new Chelsea manager.
