Chelsea make approach to sign Diomande – Blues and Bayern set for PSG battle
Chelsea are now part of the growing European battle for Ousmane Diomande, with the Sporting defender’s market accelerating rapidly over recent weeks.
Earlier this spring, Crystal Palace were the Premier League club most heavily linked with the 22-year-old. Palace explored a move worth around €50m (£43m)but Sporting considered the valuation too low and the deal never advanced.
Since then, the landscape around Diomande has changed significantly.
According to Portuguese transfer insider Flávio CostaSporting have now received approaches from Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich.
The same report claims Sporting are now only expected to consider a sale around the €60m (£52m) mark, illustrating how quickly the defender’s valuation has climbed.
Chelsea interest makes obvious sense
Chelsea are not being presented as favourites for the defender at this stage. PSG and Bayern Munich are firmly in the picture as well.
Still, Chelsea’s presence in the race is notable given the club’s situation. Centre-back issues have repeatedly hurt them this season. Inconsistency, injuries and the lack of a settled defensive structure have all contributed to difficult moments during the campaign.
As a result, the club have been actively looking for high-level defensive additions capable of becoming long-term pillars. Diomande fits that profile naturally.
At 190cm, he combines physical strength with mobility and composure in possession. He has already played more than 120 matches for Sporting CP despite only being 22 years old.
Also, he is on Chelsea’s radar for at least two years now, as we covered Portuguese reports from 2024 claiming the centre-back was in their plans. But with a much bigger reputation and European pedigree, Diomande is now a different type of target.
Sporting preparing for pressure
Sporting renewed Diomande’s contract until 2030 earlier this year and maintained his €80m (£69m) release clause.
Even so, the Portuguese club know the pressure around the player is growing rapidly. Diomande is also expected to feature for Ivory Coast at the upcoming World Cup, another factor that could push his value even higher.
A few months ago, Crystal Palace looked like the club pushing hardest for the defender.
Now the asking price has increased, Europe’s elite are involved, and Chelsea are among the clubs trying to position themselves in what is becoming one of the summer’s biggest defensive races.
