Chelsea predicted XI for Man City as Reece James decision made in FA Cup final shake-up

Chelsea take on Manchester City in this afternoon’s FA Cup final with Blues interim head coach Calum McFarlane having some big decisions to contend with

This is, without any shadow of a doubt, the biggest match of Calum McFarlane’s career thus far.

If you had told McFarlane six months ago that he would be leading Chelsea out at Wembley, the country’s most iconic stadium, for the second time in less than a month, for the FA Cup final, he might have thought you were crazy. Yet, here we are; the reality is ridiculous. His story is unbelievable in parts.

Chelsea have the opportunity to do something special against a special side in Manchester City. The Blues have the chance to upset the odds and salvage something from what otherwise has been an underwhelming season.

After last weekend’s impressive 1-1 draw away at Liverpool, McFarlane could continue with a similar three-at-the-back system – in what was a shake-up responding to Chelsea’s recent form. How will the interim head coach line his team up at Wembley? Below, Bobby Vincent predicts…

Robert Sanchez

The Chelsea goalkeeper returned to training this week after he followed concussion protocols to miss the draw at Anfield. Sanchez could return in place of Filip Jorgensen, despite the Dane doing well in Liverpool at the weekend.

Wesley Fofana

It was a bit of a surprise when Fofana was selected at Anfield given his form going into the game. However, the Frenchman was much better against the Reds. Perhaps the system suited him more, or even having Levi Colwill back alongside him.

Levi Colwill

Speaking of the Chelsea defender, he surely has to start this one. As long as Colwill has recovered alright from last week’s 90-plus minutes, then he is a shoo-in to start. The England international reminded everyone of his qualities with an excellent performance for Chelsea when they needed him most. More of the same.

Jorrel Hato

It was good to see the Dutchman back in the side last weekend as well. Hato’s performances in 2026 have been really promising. He deserves the chance to start in the Chelsea defence on such a big stage.

Malo want

Gusto could be set for a more advanced role, if indeed Chelsea play the three/five-at-the-back formation at Wembley. You would expect it to be more of a five in defence given City’s attacking prowess.

Reece James

James could be set for his first Chelsea start since March. The Chelsea captain could be used in a midfield role for the Blues against City. Oh, how the skipper would love to get his hands on another trophy!

Moises Caicedo

Caicedo looked back – or at least somewhere close to – his brilliant best at Anfield seven days ago. The Ecuadorian showed off his passing range in that game. His role against a strong City side might be a bit more industrious.

Marc Cucurella

Chelsea looked to exploit Liverpool’s right-hand side last weekend, meaning Cucurella, playing in an advanced role on the left, had a major part to play. Surely McFarlane won’t look to use the Spaniard in quite the same way this afternoon. Either way, he will need another strong performance from Cucurella.

Cole Palmer

We’re just waiting for Palmer to explode into action. That is how it has felt for months now. If he can do it this afternoon on such a big stage, against his former club, it will be an unforgettable day for the Blues.

Enzo Fernandez

Fernandez was almost used as the left-sided No.10 last weekend, although he was absolutely everywhere. The Argentine has proved to be the man for the big occasion this season – and he can once again make himself the man this afternoon.

João Pedro

With 20 goals to his name in all competitions this season, it has been an excellent debut campaign for Joao Pedro. The Brazil international has been the main bright spark for the Blues this term. Can he lead the rescue mission for this season today?
