Chelsea, Liverpool Tottenham and Manchester United are all keeping close tabs on Jan Paul van Hecke, with the race for the Brighton centre-back now starting to heat up ahead of the summer window.
The Dutch defender has become one of Brighton’s most reliable performers and it is no surprise that bigger clubs are beginning to circle. At 25, Van Hecke is entering the prime years of his career, while still looking young enough to improve further. That combination makes him especially attractive to Premier League clubs looking for a defender who can step straight into a high-level squad.
Liverpool have struggled this season defensively, with Konate likely to depart the club this summer.
Chelsea’s interest is easy to understand. They have invested heavily in young defenders, but there are still questions over consistency, injuries and long-term balance at the back. Van Hecke would bring Premier League experience, physical strength and composure in possession. He is not just a traditional centre-back who clears his lines; he is comfortable stepping out, playing through pressure and helping build attacks from deep.
Tottenham are also firmly in the picture. Spurs have admired Van Hecke for some time and could see him as a strong fit for their aggressive defensive line. His ability to defend large spaces, compete in duels and pass forward quickly would suit the way Tottenham want to play. With Champions League ambitions and a need for more defensive depth, this is a deal that could make plenty of sense.
Manchester United’s interest adds another layer. United are expected to reshape their defence again, with uncertainty around several senior players. Van Hecke would offer them something they badly need: a defender with Premier League rhythm, good age profile and the confidence to play in a possession-heavy system.
His season stats back up the hype. Van Hecke has made 34 Premier League starts this campaign, scoring three goals and providing three assists. He has also been a consistent presence in Brighton’s back line, showing durability as well as quality. For a centre-back, that attacking contribution is a useful bonus, especially from set-pieces.
Brighton will not want to lose him cheaply. His contract runs until 2027, and the club have reportedly tried to tie him down to a new deal. That gives them some leverage, although the situation becomes more interesting if the player decides this is the right moment for a bigger move.
The expected fee could sit around £40m to £50m, with Brighton likely to push hard if multiple clubs bid.
