‘New permanent head coach within days’ – Late-night Chelsea news drops
Following Liverpool’s 4-2 loss against Aston Villa, Chelsea fans have been left worried about their managerial search. Xabi Alonso is the one most would prefer to get the job. But if Arne Slot ends up getting sacked and the Anfield post becomes available, it is very likely that the Spaniard might choose to return to his former club.
Firstly, he has a history with Liverpool, which will surely be an attraction. But at the same time, one cannot deny that the Reds have a much better track record of success than Chelsea in recent years. Since the Boehly-Clearlake takeover, the Blues have not even qualified for the Champions League in three out of four seasons so far.
It does look like the Blues are eager to move quickly with their managerial appointment, whether it is Alonso or somebody else. The FA Cup final against Manchester City seems to be the final speed bump before things accelerate.
According to a report from Matt Law in The Telegraph, the appointment process is set to ‘move quickly’ following the game against Manchester City. Chelsea are aiming to land their new permanent head coach within days of the FA Cup final. There is optimism that Alonso may be ready to join.
Could Liverpool sack Arne Slot?
Alonso seems to be the standout candidate right now. And most reliable journalist have maintained that Liverpool have no plans to sack Arne Slot.
Things can change quickly in football. Let’s not forget, many of these same journalists had said that Chelsea were not going to review Liam Rosenior’s performance until the summer of 2027. Results did not improve and he was sacked a few weeks later.
It does not mean that the information is incorrect. It is just that football is a fluid business. Just because something is true today does not mean that things will happen accordingly tomorrow as well. Common sense suggests that Slot’s future might end up depending on whether Liverpool make the Champions League or not.
Chelsea moving quickly would be both positive and negative
Of course, moving quickly could be both positive and negative. It could help them land Alonso. But at the same time, if they miss out on the Spaniard, it might be best to take their time with the choice rather than making a rushed decision on an alternative. None of the other linked managers seem like outstanding fits. Not even Andoni Iraola.
The report also brings up a few other interesting points. Alonso, or whoever ends up becoming the next manager, will not be given the keys to Chelsea Football Club. But they will be made an equal partner in the identification and signing of players.
The next manager’s role is likely to be more meaningful than some of his predecessors. He will have a big say on the types of characters and players he believes will push the club forward.
