Chelsea fans worried Xabi Alonso move may collapse after what just happened
It is safe to say that Xabi Alonso has emerged as the preferred candidate for the Chelsea job. The Spaniard’s camp are said to be in talks with the club. And things are believed to be moving in the right direction. That being said, not everybody is convinced that BlueCo will be able to pull it off. And those doubts will only grow after tonight.
There has been a fear that Alonso would prefer the Liverpool job, if it opened up. There have been suggestions that the club are not interested in parting ways with Arne Slot. That might change though. It does not take long for plans to pivot in football.
Liverpool have just been handed a 4-2 defeat by Aston Villa. Their place in the Champions League is not certain yet. And if they do end up missing out, that could lead to Slot’s sacking, especially with a large section of the fanbase already wanting him out.

After Liverpool’s defeat, a lot of Chelsea fans seem to be worried about the club’s chances of signing Alonso. One said: “Not looking good lol. Let’s wrap this deal up ASAP.”
Another Chelsea fan added: “This is now when to see if BlueCo are serious about getting Xabi.”
Unfortunately, if the Liverpool job opens up, it might no longer be in the hands of BlueCo. If the Reds want the Spaniard, and vice versa, there is not much say that Chelsea will have on the matter.
Of course, this was always going to be a risk. Now, it remains to be seen if Liverpool are able to secure Champions League qualification. And even if they do, with all the negativity amongst their fanbase when it comes to Slot, there will still remain a question around his future.
Chelsea cannot afford to miss out on Xabi Alonso
The issue is, Chelsea have painted themselves into a corner here. Firstly, it is clear that they need to appoint a top manager this summer. While journalists have always maintained that Andoni Iraola remains in the race, it is very clear who the fans want.
Recent reports have suggested that it is not just the fans either. A lot of players in the dressing room might be hoping for Alonso’s appointment as well.
So, if they miss out from here, it will be a bad look for BlueCo. And appointing Iraola after so much excitement around Alonso is going to be anti-climactic to say the least.
