For a day on which Chelsea lost the FA Cup final, there is plenty of positivity around the club. That is because immediately after the game, news broke that Xabi Alonso was going to become the next manager. The rumours had been doing the rounds for days. Some were worried that Liverpool could sack Arne Slot and swoop in for the Spaniard. That is not going to happen. He will be in the Stamford Bridge hot seat.

Of course, the timing of the news is unlikely to be coincidental. People most probably wanted some positivity around the place after the FA Cup defeat. And what better way to do that? It has clearly worked.

Now, it is about giving Alonso the right tools to succeed. If Chelsea continue to do what they have done over the past four seasons, not much is expected to change, no matter who the ‘manager’ or ‘head coach’ is.

There is a positive update on that. It looks like Chelsea are ready to include Alonso as part of the conversation when it comes to making footballing decisions. Fabrizio Romano said on his YouTube channel:

Xabi Alonso, from what I understand, will be heavily involved in transfer strategy at Chelsea. Xabi Alonso accepted the job at Chelsea also because Chelsea told Xabi Alonso that he’s going to be part of the conversation, he’s going to be part of the planning, he’s going to be involved in picking players, the positions, obviously always together with the club, together with the decision-makers at Chelsea.

Why Chelsea fans will love Fabrizio Romano’s update

This update will be music to the ears of Chelsea fans. This is something that they have wanted for a while. For the manager to have a real say on matters.

At the end of the day, they are the ones setting up the team every matchday. So, it makes little sense for them to be out of the conversation when it comes to building the squad. It looks like BlueCo might finally be starting to learn from their errors.

It also looks like Alonso might have learned from his failed stint at Real Madrid. As Romano said:

Xabi believes that deciding together, as they did for example at Bayer Leverkusen, was really important to build the fortune of the club.

BlueCo must back Alonso this summer

BlueCo have delivered on one front. They are set to bring in Alonso. That is what most fans wanted. So, there can be no complaints.

But then, there is another side to the coin. Alonso needs to be given the squad with which he can succeed and meet the expectations of Chelsea fans.

There is an understanding that not too many changes are expected this summer. But it has also been suggested that the club will be targeting two or three ‘experienced’ players. What does that mean in terms of the level of those players? We can only wait and see.
